When you have solar panels, you still stay connected to PG&E.
• During the day, your solar panels make electricity.
• If you make more than you use, the extra goes to the power grid (PG&E).
• At night or when it’s cloudy, you use power from PG&E.
All year long, PG&E keeps track of how much power you:
• Send to them (extra solar energy)
• Use from them (when solar isn’t enough)
At the end of the year, they do a final calculation. That’s called the true-up bill. It shows whether you owe money or if you made enough to cover your use.
Why Would a True-Up Bill Be So High?
A few reasons:
• Your home used more electricity than before (more A/C, new appliances, people staying home).
• Your solar panels didn’t produce enough (maybe they’re dirty, shaded, or not working right).
• PG&E’s rates went up.
• You were put on a different billing plan without realizing it.
How Can I Make My Solar System Work Better?
Here are simple tips to get the most out of your solar panels:
1. Clean Your Panels
Dirt, bird droppings, and dust block sunlight. Clean them every few months or after a dust storm.
2. Trim Trees & Clear Shade
Make sure trees or new buildings aren’t blocking the sun.
3. Run Appliances During the Day
Use your washer, dryer, and dishwasher during daylight hours when solar is working.
4. Check for Damage or Malfunctions
Ask your solar company for a system check-up if you think something’s off.
5. Use Less Power at Night
That’s when you rely on PG&E power. Use ceiling fans instead of A/C at night, and turn off unused lights.
6. Monitor Your System
Many systems have an app or online dashboard—check it monthly to see how your panels are performing.
Fresno residents are experiencing record-high solar true-up bills due to PG&E rate increases and energy usage changes, such as switching from gas furnaces to heat pumps.
