As we prepare for cooler weather, subtle changes around the house can help you save money. Here’s a list of a few things you do:
1) window blinds can be reversed to allow sunlight in rather than blocking all light. While still providing privacy if the inside edge is down, sunlight can still filter in to help warm the house.
2) ceiling fans can be switched to reverse and slowed to low speed allowing the fan to circulate air and force warm air down without the chilling affect of a fan. However, in unoccupied rooms the best plan is to still turn fans off. The exception being in family rooms with ceilings reaching two stories. These fans help to even out the temperature between floors. Still on low speed and blowing up.
3) Today’s fireplaces are more efficient than 20 years ago, but be sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors batteries are current. If you have an open face fireplace, wood burning or gas, remember the importance of opening and closing the flue with each use.
4) This one you may not have considered. If you have a pool, adjust the automatic settings for winter. If left to summer settings it will cost you up to twice as much to maintain in winter than summer. First, set the pump to come on every two or three days instead of daily. Also reduce the number of hours of operation to maybe half. Third, and this is the real savings, change the settings to come on at night. Otherwise the pump may run twice because the freeze protection will turn on in the cooler overnight hours automatically.
5) Clean your dryer vent.
