‼️ Attention ‼️ Some advice for those with electric heat pump.
Heat pump do lightly freeze up with ice rings around the coil, this is normal operations in freezing wet weather. But they also automatically defrost themselves, however the picture below is a unit that is completely frozen up and not going into defrost and is causing damage to the compressor.
In addition:
When they freeze up and go into defrost, there may be periods of lukewarm temperatures coming out of your vents. This could be that your electric heat kit “back up or emergency heat” isn’t properly sized (comon practice in our parts of Texas since we hardly have hard freezes) but may also indicate the system is up to pare.
‼️ Attention ‼️ Something to also be aware of is “THICK” ice build up over the entire unit. Think back to that really bad ice storm we had like 5yrs ago when there were thick sheets of ice on the cars, walls, and everything. The heat pumps aren’t designed and intended to operate under those type of conditions.
‼️ If we have another bad ice strom and the the unit gets completely covered in thick clear ice, you SHOULD SWITCH over to the electric heat or emergency heat on the thermostat. ‼️
I pray this storm isn’t that bad, we don’t lose electricity, there’s not a lot of tree and property damage, and everyone stays safe and warm.
