I lost my dad too young.

But I have this picture.

We were at dinner with our adopted grandpa Nick... and at some point he asked to hold our phones.

Mine. My sister's. His personal. His work phone.

When I asked for mine back...

He just kept pulling phones out of his pocket.

One at a time.

Like a bad magician who absolutely knew what he was doing.

We laughed so hard we couldn't breathe.

That's him.

That's what I carry into every job and every day life!

To every dad out there today... I hope you've got a moment like this one tucked away somewhere. Hold onto it.

And to the ones who lost theirs too soon... I see you today.

Mia made me stop everything last night and pray that every single person hit by this storm loved Jesus and was safe.

She's 7.

I don't know why that hit me as hard as it did... but it did.

Our guys had to find shelter last night too. We were out in it. We saw what it left behind.

If your home took damage from the storm... roof, structure, water getting in anywhere it shouldn't... we want to help.

We handle the insurance side. We show up. We do the work right.

You've got enough stress right now. That part doesn't have to be one of them.

A month ago we ran a giveaway.

You showed up.

Life happened on our end... printing issues, a surgery, some shirts that weren't quite right.

But here's the thing about Baker Design
in Greensburg — Tim runs that shop the same way I run IRRS.

If it's not right, you fix it.
Even when it wasn't your fault.

He didn't just replace the bad shirts.
He made sure we had more than enough to take care of every single person who commented.

That's the kind of people I want to do business with.
That's the kind of town I'm proud to be building in.

So here's how we're doing this...

We're not just dropping shirts in a mailbox.

My daughter Mia is 7 years old.
She's been part of this from the beginning.

When you are the hammer... swing as violently as you can. Nobody cared when you were the nail.

That's the logic a lot of men carry. And honestly... I understand it. But it's wrong.

Too many gruff men become the hammer because it was done to them. They pass the wound down like it's wisdom.

I've had men in my life who led that way. They swung hard... and they still gave me something. They showed me what I didn't want to become. That's a gift too... even if it didn't feel like one.

But I've also had men who led differently. Strong. Solid. And still willing to wash feet.

God would rather tame a mustang than inspire a mule. The fire in you isn't the problem. It's what you aim it at.

Strong men aren't called to be the hammer. We're called to be the hands and feet.

This is a continuation of a series honoring the men who shaped me. It started with my friend Scott Turner... and in June it will feature my friend Scott Clemens. Because every man on this list left a mark... whether they led well, led hard, or somewhere in between.

Pawpaw was 15 years old when he signed up for the Navy.

Had his uncle forge his dad's signature to do it.

He ended up in the Pacific. A signalman. Standing in the open while one of the most brutal wars in history happened around him.

He came home.

Became an oil field roughneck. Drove trucks. Retired with two pensions at the same time.

His name was Jack Roberts.

They called him Jackrabbit.

What most people never knew... hidden under his long sleeves his whole life... were the tattoos he got as a 15 year old boy going to war.

Anchors. Betty Boop. A cracker jack box. A star that said Lucky.

A bible, a smile, and long sleeves hid a strong warrior... both for God and for the United States of America.

He taught me how to work. How to have grit. How to do hard things without complaining.

And how to drink buttermilk even when you hated it... because a quarter was a quarter. 😆

I miss him.

Happy Memorial Day, Jackrabbit.
