Should you fix your own furnace or A/C? with guides all over the internet and YouTube, many people are doing it! it's a way to save money and feel good about fixing the problem on your own. If you are comfortable and have the correct tools changing a part usually isn't too hard! But should you do it?

Did you diagnose it correctly? Did you install the new part correctly? Is it the correct part? Was your furnace or A/C under warranty? These are all things you don't have to worry about when a qualified technician is working on it! When we find an issue we ask "why is that failing" and look deeper and then after the repair, we make sure everything is in working order. We also will try and check if a system is under warranty and regardless of the installing company, we will honor any manufacture warranty which can save you hundreds and won't void the warranty like it would if you attempted the repair yourself. It may cost more to have us do the work, but you can be assure it was done correctly and we guarantee our work for at least 1 year on all repairs.

You just did a new load of laundry and after pulling it all out of the dryer, you have damp/wet clothes. The screen may be clean, but how is the dryer vent? Your dryer vent is essential part of your dryer and probably one of the main reason people call the manufacture to say it doesn't work. New dryers will sometimes shut down and stop running entirely if there isn't sufficient air flow. Having things like screws connecting the vent for dryer lint to catch on, too many turns, or simply being too long can cause issues and it is a good idea to have your vent checked, cleaned, or even replaced if you suspect the vent being the culprit. Having a blocked vent can even be a fire hazard which is much worse than wet clothes.

Most dryer manufactures and state and local codes call for 35 feet or less and each 90° elbow counts as 5 feet. When your vent exceeds this length, you may start getting errors on the dryer or you may have to put the clothes in for another cycle. They may not be as common in homes today, but boilers are something else that we work on! Whether there is water leaking from your boiler or noisy when it's running, we can service, repair or replace your boiler. Your traditional cast iron boiler was built to last and new models are available. I've personally worked on many cast iron boilers that are 40+ years old and still running, but with a cast iron heat exchanger, you are limited on efficiency and they take up space. Today, there are boilers that are highly efficient that can also maintain a comfortable temperature throughout your home. Most newer models are compact and mount on the wall so they take up little space and can even be a combination (known as a combi) system where it can also be an on demand water heater, giving you even more space in your mechanical room and the luxury of continuous hot water.

Remember that your boiler usually runs with just water in the system and if it is not serviced and fails while you are away, you risk costly damage to your home if the pipes in the boiler freeze and burst. Adding boiler antifreeze to the system also helps prevent pipes from freezing to as low as -15° to -20°. Also many older boilers do not have safeties to shut the system down in the event of the system running out of water or if the water temperature gets too hot.

Just because your furnace is running, doesn't mean there isn't anything wrong! Some issues are intermittent to where it keeps the house warm enough while it isn't too cold to notice and others have no symptoms at all! Things like leaves in the vent intake, a mouse nest in the vent, plugged condensate drain, and a dirty flame sensor can cause your furnace to lock out and automatically reset after a couple hours. When we do a furnace check, we look for any issues that are already present or may cause a problem down the road. We also look for heat exchanger issues like soot or cracks which not only can cause your furnace to stop working, but also become a fire or carbon monoxide hazard! If your have an older furnace there may not be enough safeties that are able to shut the furnace down during these kinds of failures. Dirty filters can contribute to overheating the furnace which can prematurely damage the heat exchanger as well as your blower motor and cause the system to run inefficiently and unchanged humidifier pads can lead to costly water damage to the furnace and surrounding areas. Having your furnace checked before the winter gets going is a great way to ensure your home is warm and the system is safe. Do you have a Carrier, Bryant, or Payne high efficiency that looks like this? There is a chance you may have a heat exchanger issue and if it is under 20 years old, you can still have it replaced under the manufacture's warranty. Telltale signs of the issue are: pressure switch error codes, water leaking from the furnace, an odd smell from the exhaust, or rollout switch tripping, but can be detected early during an inspection.

If you haven't had the heat exchanger replaced previously or unsure, give us a call and we can inspect the furnace and give you your options. Catching it early will help prevent your furnace from shutting down when you need it most and ensure the furnace is safe. Most cases it is covered under warranty if the date of manufacture was within 20 years.
