Solar is starting to look less like a construction project — and more like an appliance.
I’ve been looking at the emerging U.S. market for plug-in or “balcony” solar, and the technology is worth watching.
The concept is surprisingly simple:
Solar panel → microinverter → 120V AC → compatible GFCI-protected outlet.
The microinverter is the key. It converts the panel’s DC electricity into grid-synchronized AC and incorporates protections required for interactive operation.
What’s particularly interesting is the emergence of UL 3700, a safety standard specifically addressing interactive plug-in PV systems.
We’re talking about very small systems — typically a few hundred watts — not replacements for conventional rooftop or commercial solar.
But that’s what makes this interesting.
A renter, apartment resident or homeowner without a suitable roof could potentially generate electricity without installing a traditional multi-kW solar system.
There are still important utility, permitting, electrical-code and interconnection requirements that vary by jurisdiction.
But zoom out.
Solar has spent decades getting cheaper. The next disruption may be making it dramatically easier to deploy.
That’s a trend worth watching.
