This is a named storm, yall!
"Winter storm Fern"...it could be a very serious event but hopefully not to you or yours. Since homes in our areas are not built for the cold, (nor are the people) a lot of copper and pvc pipe will freeze and bust. Trees will snap. There were over 400,000 claims in the 2021 freeze. It was crazy...even supply companies ran out of materials. Please prepare ahead of schedule!
✅️Don't forget your pets..protect 'em at all costs..you are their best friend!
✅️Check on your neighbors and especially the elderly
Just in case the power goes out and stays out:
✅️Fill your gas tanks – you can get warm in the car or use it to charge devices
✅️Charge backup batteries for cell phones and other devices and have them ready.
✅️Gather candles, flashlight, and blankets
✅️Insulate your exterior exposed hose bibs and irrigation piping
Shut off and drain your irrigation system
✅️Use the fireplace to get some heat – make sure the damper is open!
Print and read your DEC page from your insurance policy, get your agent’s number, and download the app to allow you to quickly file a claim and stay ahead of the rush.
Know how to shut your water off either at the meter or at the main cut off in the house.
Water will not start flowing until after it melts so it could be mid week before you know you have a problem.
✅️If you have issues..VERY IMPORTANT take photos before anything gets removed for insurance purposes, INCLUDING PERSONAL PROPERTY (couches, rugs, table, chairs, antique buffet etc..)
Fill a bathtub with water in case you need it to flush toilets. If you need it, use a pitcher to fill the top tank and then flush.
Shut off and drain your pool equipment is recommended but If you choose not to, make sure your discharge valve flows to the pool and spa at the same time. If power drops out, immediately drain and open up your equipment.
Get the name and number of a plumber and/or contractor together.
