In the fields of gas dispersion measurement and flotation cell hydrodynamics, sensors and methodologies developed by the McGill University group have received wide acceptance in both industrial and research communities due to their robustness, ease of use and precision of results. The bubble imaging device, the McGill Bubble Size Analyzer (MBSA), continually extracts bubble samples in situ from the float cell and directs them to a separate water-filled chamber for digital imaging. It is important that the bubble size distribution (BSD) is preserved after it enters the MBSA, without bubble melting occurring and affecting the measurement. (Nesset, 2013)

The size of the bubbles created in the flotation process is of great importance for the efficiency of the mineral separation achieved. Meanwhile, foam transport between phases is believed to be perhaps the most important reason for the interactive nature of phenomena that occur in the float and mass phases, since the foam adsorbed on the surface of the rising bubbles is removed from the mass phase and then released into the foam when a fraction of the bubbles burst.
