The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy has requested a 114% YOY increase in and intergovernmental programs to improve the resilience of homes and buildings in the U.S.

This comes as a response to the devastation seen to homes and businesses after the February storm that set a new record for largest area of the U.S. ever blanketed by snow – 73% of the nation. The one week onslaught of cold weather resulted in $18 Billion dollars’ worth of damage to homes and businesses.

Important preparations to protect from ice and snow include: protecting pipes and roofs, cleaning gutters, sealing windows and doors, changing furnace filters, removing tree branches, and having the fireplace inspected.

As a developer of anti-icing coatings, we have a role to play in the improved resiliency of the American infrastructure and we look forward to taking part in these changes.

Did you know over 70% of roads in the U.S. are in snowy areas? These regions receive more than 5in of average snowfall annually with approximately two-thirds of the population living in these areas. Road maintenance during wintertime accounts for 20% of state D.O.T. budgets – amounting to 2.3 billion on snow and ice control operations annually. This does not include the millions of dollars spent to repair damage caused by and .

The American Jobs Plan intends to invest $621 billion in transportation infrastructure and resilience. Not only does the plan intend to strengthen our roadways from regular wear and tear, but it will also factor in the necessary precautions to prevent damage due to extreme weather and climate-related disaster events. In 2020 alone, the U.S. faced 22 climate change disasters that resulted in a cumulative price of $95 billion in repairs to homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

As a developer of anti-icing coatings, we have a role to play in the modernization of the American infrastructure and we look forward to taking part in these changes.

While the American Rescue Plan is changing the course of the pandemic and delivering relief for working families, this is no time to build back to the way

The industry is taking off! eVTOL (short for "electric vertical takeoff and landing), which function much like helicopters, have a myriad of uses and are expected to get FAA approval for commercial passenger travel as soon as 2024.

Like helicopters, these aircraft take off vertically and don't require runways. Perhaps most importantly, they are electrically-powered, meaning lower carbon emissions, less pollution, less noise, and they can be “refueled” almost anywhere, giving eVTOLs lots of flexibility in urban environments.

Well-known companies have been making significant investments in the eVTOL space. For example, UPS intends on purchasing these from Beta Technologies in order to ‘more quickly transport time sensitive deliveries’. Beta Technologies has also worked a deal with Uber for passenger aircraft, meaning you could catch a quick flight from your Uber app.

Similar to other forms of aviation, these aircraft are required to meet certain anti-icing specifications during flight. Because of our coatings successful performance in an icing wind tunnel test (reduced ice accumulation by 4x while maintaining aerodynamic properties) our coatings are now being tested on these aircraft. We are excited to be part of the future of aircraft technology!

Major eVTOL players to keep an eye on:
Joby Aviation, Lilium, Beta Technologies, Airbus, Wisk, Bell Flight, Volocopter GmbH, EHang (NASDAQ: EH), and Jaunt Air Mobility.

eVTOL are electric helicopters that could be flying people and cargo on short- to medium-distance hops as soon as 2024.

Ever wonder how planes land in the Antarctic? Wheeled aircraft are able to land thanks to the development of blue-ice runways. Prior to the development of these runways, deliveries could only be made by ship - limited to the summer time when the polar ice started melting – or, by ski-equipped smaller aircraft.

So what is blue-ice? Blue ice forms in areas where there is no net annual snow accumulation. However, the lack of snow accumulation is due to wind transport and sublimation, rather than melting. This results in a low light reflectance, which is why the ice appears blue in color. As air bubbles are forced out of the blue-ice, the density of the ice increases, which strengthens the ice surface and allows for wheeled aircraft to safely be supported by the runway. Since aircrafts can only rely on reverse thrust to decelerate, blue-ice runways are typically miles long!

Thanks to their development, blue-ice runways allow for safer transport of cargo and allow for rescue and medical flights to the Antarctic.

A recent study by Dr. Hui Hu of Iowa State University quantified the effect of accumulation on the performance of a wind turbine. In his research, Dr. Hu studied the effect of ice on a 34-turbine, 50MW near the East China Sea and found that after approximately 30 hours of exposure to cold and wet conditions, ice accumulated up to a foot thick at the blade tips. This one-foot-thick buildup of ice resulted in an 80% reduction in power production!

Ice buildup on the blades greatly reduces the aerodynamic performance of the turbines. Because ice does not form evenly on the blades, the turbine becomes unbalanced resulting in greater forces on the internal mechanisms of the turbine. Dr. Hu studied the impact of these stresses and found they can reduce the lifetime of the turbine’s internal parts by ¾ or more!

An Iowa State University professor and his research team studied in China just how much ice can grow on a wind turbine blade and how much that can reduce the turbine's performance. There are reasons Iowa's wind turbines don't face the same degree of issues.

What is the difference between heavy and light snow? Simply put - the amount of liquid in the snow. The amount of liquid found in snow is based on the temperature change between the sky and ground as the snow makes its descent.

If the snow crosses through areas were the temperature is above freezing, the snow will partially melt and increase the amount of liquid content it is carrying, thus resulting in heavier snow.

For comparison, a foot of dry snow on your roof weighs approximately 6,000lb while a foot of wet snow weighs a whopping 19,000lbs!

Residents of Colorado are no strangers to this phenomenon. This past weekend brought 5-6 inches of wet snow but it caused more damage from fallen trees than the 27 inches of dry snow they saw last month! Check out the compilation of images and videos in this news report to see the impact of heavy wet snow.

The spring storm brought some much-needed moisture, but it wasn't great news for the area's tree branches.

Listen as our CEO discusses how our anti-icing coatings offer a passive technology solution for icing challenges that many wind farms face.

A special thank you to Allen Hall, CEO of Weather Guard Wind Energy and Dan Blewett, Podcast Host of the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast, for having us on your show.

In Texas, early in 2021, wind turbine icing was brought to the national spotlight as power production halted, sending the state into a massive power outage.
