The Story
Around the age of 14, electricity spikes (which are the backlash of blackouts) ripped through our surge protector and destroyed our refrigerator. My family was not in the financial position to replace it and fear arose that our food would quickly spoil. Thankfully, because of my God-given photographic memory, I was able to recall a picture from my physics book that showed how a refrigerator operates, and I was able to fix our refrigerator.
However, this situation sparked an interest in finding a solution to this ongoing energy crisis in The Bahamas. My first attempt at developing a solution, was to build a device that would be able to power small necessities during a blackout such as miniature fans and medical devices, lights, TVβs, laptops and radios. With this creation, you would also have the ability to charge your phone, in case urgent communication is needed, all the while being environmentally friendly and independent of the need of fossil fuels.
After witnessing the catastrophic results of Hurricane Dorian and hearing the outcry of the Bahamian people for relief from the ongoing blackouts, I was convicted to begin redeveloping my senior project which was the Portable Solar Generator (PSG).
After creating the prototype for the PSG and doing some testing I realized that it had numerous applications and uses for everyday occupations like barbers, construction workers, and street vendors.
This is only the first step of my intentional efforts to bring much-needed change to the energy sector in the Bahamas.
