2. The viability of solar largely depends on whether your area supports net metering. Without net metering, it's challenging to benefit unless you're looking to go completely off-grid or have variable electricity rates that peak, where batteries could help.
For instance, in Hempstead, Texas, there are no incentives for surplus solar energy returned to the grid. However, in Houston, some electric providers will match the rate you pay per kWh and compensate you for any excess power generated.
