When the Astrodome opened in 1965, its roof was made of thousands of translucent Lucite panes, so they could grow real grass indoors.

One problem: the glare was so brutal that outfielders literally couldn't track fly balls.

The fix? Paint the panes white. Which promptly killed all the grass. So the Astros finished the season playing on spray-painted dead grass, until Monsanto's ChemGrass (renamed AstroTurf) was installed in 1966.

A roof designed to grow grass ended up inventing artificial turf. Only in Houston. ๐Ÿ˜„
