🐞 Friendly Neighbor or Unwanted Houseguest?
With temperatures warming up to 60°F today, you may notice small beetles gathering around sunny windows and walls. But look closely — is it a helpful ladybug, or an Asian lady beetle?
How to tell the difference:
Asian Lady Beetle
• Black “M” or “W” marking behind the head
• Orange to red body with black spots
• Commonly enters homes in groups and can emit an odor
Native Ladybug
• Deeper red color
• Solid black head with no “M” marking
• Overwinters outdoors and is beneficial to gardens
Why are they inside?
These beetles often overwinter inside wall voids. Warm “false spring” days wake them up, and they follow heat and light into living spaces.
Homeowner Tips:
• Do not crush — they can stain surfaces and smell
• Vacuum gently and empty outside
• Seal gaps around windows, doors, and siding to prevent future entry
