This or that? A wall full of switches, or one keypad that sets the whole room with a single touch.

With lighting control, each button on a keypad recalls a scene, like Dinner, Relax, or All Off, so there are fewer switches on the wall and no guessing which one does what. Which would you rather live with? Switches or keypad? Comment below.

Brighter isn't better.

When a room feels flat, the reflex is to add more downlights on an even grid. That lights the floor, leaves the walls dim, and fills the ceiling with holes and glare. What actually makes a room feel bright is light on the walls, art, millwork, and stone, so we start with fewer fixtures placed with intent, layer in accent and wall-wash lighting, and set up control so every scene works day and night. It's an easy conversation to have early, before the ceiling plan is locked.

Fall in Houston is finally here, and this is the season to live outside.

At this pool pavilion, a 65" Samsung Terrace outdoor TV sits on a swivel mount, so it turns toward the lounge seating or out to the pool. A Sonance landscape speaker system covers the whole backyard and pool with clean, even sound, and Control4 runs all the audio and video from one remote, keypad, or phone. Game day, a playlist by the water, or a movie under the string lights, it's all a tap away.

One button on the headboard, and the whole bedroom settles in.

We mount a custom Control4 keypad right into the padded headboard so lights, shades, and drapes are within reach — no hunting for switches. This one is engraved Bedroom, Pendants, Goodnight, Shades, and Drapes. Control4 panelized lighting handles the layers in the room; Lutron motorized shades and Lutron motorized drapes take care of the glass. Press Goodnight and the scene does the rest. The best-sounding speakers in these rooms are the ones you can't see.

In a media room we installed a Sonance Invisible 5.1 surround system behind finished surfaces, so nothing competes with the millwork, stone, and lighting. On a different project, the same approach kept a plaster fireplace surround clean around the art. The cutaway slide shows a Sonance Invisible IS8 behind the finish — speakers mount flush and get finished over with the wall, which means placement gets decided with the design team early, not after the finish is done. If a clean wall matters as much as great sound on your next project, we'd love to talk through where invisible audio fits.

The ceiling looks intentional when the speakers match the lights.

We use James Loudspeaker small-aperture speakers sized to sit with the recessed cans — same visual language across the plane, not oversized grilles fighting the lighting layout. Tiny square apertures, careful placement with HVAC and fixtures, and a finished ceiling that still reads as architecture.

That only works when speaker model and cutout size are chosen with the lighting plan — before drywall — so everything lines up as one design, not two systems competing for attention.
