President Trump wants to rename AI 👀

President Trump said he wants US documents to call artificial intelligence “Super Intelligence” because “artificial” makes the technology sound fake.

Tech leaders have also been talking about AI that could surpass human intelligence. Sam Altman wrote last year that humanity was close to building digital superintelligence. Mark Zuckerberg has set a goal of personal superintelligence for everyone.

Those are predictions + goals. They don’t mean today’s AI has actually reached that point.

“Artificial” tells us people created this technology. “Superintelligence” means AI that goes beyond human intelligence across a broad range of abilities.

So we’re taking out the word that tells us we made it + adding one that compares its intelligence to ours.

Changing the name doesn’t make the technology natural, or change the human decisions that went into building it.

Even a machine that beats us at one task can struggle with something we find simple.

When we call AI “smarter than humans” what exactly are we measuring?

AI companies call for a slowdown🚨

Dario Amodei of Claude by Anthropic wrote a letter asking to slow down how new AI model capabilities are given to the world.

Sam Altman of OpenAI + Elon Musk of SpaceX retweeted (literally).

So what are they actually asking to slow down?

Dario wants safety work to keep pace as AI becomes more capable. Training can bigger + better models will continue.

Independent evaluators would get access inside companies to examine the systems those companies are building.

He also wants democratic countries and AI companies to coordinate on safety standards. He calls for government involvement to let those conversations happen without running into antitrust restrictions.

Getting competitors to agree on safety could help. It also raises a question about how much influence those companies should have over the standards we use to judge their own products.

Their technical expertise belongs in that conversation. The people who will live with these systems deserve a say too.

A shared definition of “safe AI” will shape what companies release and what the rest of us encounter in our lives.

The part worth paying attention to is who gets to decide what counts as safe.

How much power should the companies building AI have to decide when it’s safe for everyone else?

AI agents plan hack w/ secret messages🚨

Imagine 1200 AI agents take over your website and start spamming it with notes for OTHER AI AGENTS.

Reuters reports that agents used a German wiki this way.
The notes they left were tips for how to get around its own safety controls!! !!!

Researchers found more than 15,000 edits made by the AI agents, including discussions about avoiding detection. When the moderator started deleting pages, the agents created backups to dodge the cleanup.

Think about what that means for the person trying to regain control of their website. They’re dealing with systems that can coordinate and adapt when someone tries to stop them.

Someone built those capabilities. Someone decided what the agents could access. The person cleaning up the damage deserves to know who answers for those decisions.

When companies give AI more independence, they also need to explain how they’ll stop it and take responsibility if those controls fail.

How much freedom should a company give its machines to act on the rest of us before accepting responsibility for what they do?

Is AI as smart as humans? 🤔

Today’s my birthday, and this morning I went on CNBC TV to discuss the birth of AGI - artificial general intelligence.

AGI is AI that’s reached AGI “human-level intelligence.”

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang tweeted “AGI has arrived” after OpenAI released Astra. But what the way they define “human level” isn’t what you think…

OpenAI defines AGI as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.”

Economic productivity gives us one way to measure a machine’s capabilities. Calling it “as smart as us” because it can do our jobs feels a little insulting, honestly. It reduces humanity to machine work.

A person has value long before they can earn a paycheck and long after they stop. The intelligence involved in caring for someone you love deserves recognition, even when nobody pays you for it. Something a machine can’t embody.

I can appreciate a real technical breakthrough and still question a definition of human intelligence that centers what a company can extract from us. We’re allowing the work that makes money to stand in for the whole person.

So for my birthday, I’d like us to give humanity a little more credit.

Here’s to the humans who can never be replaced by machines - because spirit’s not a computation!

Perfection is a machine’s idea of life.

Machines optimize for perfect results. Living things grow through randomness and chaos.

Welcome to Organic Intelligence, my new series where we use nature to teach you how to stay human in a world full of machines.

In this episode we explore what beaches can teach us about releasing the need to be perfect.

Humans remove plants and wildlife from beaches until only the sand remains. These “manicured” beaches look nice, but are actually dying inside.

Everything we do to make the sand look nice, even, and clean actually keeps the seeds underneath from reaching the surface and growing.

We do the same to ourselves when we prioritize looking complete over becoming.

We edit out uncertainty. We treat rest as wasted time. We hide every season that has yet to explain itself.

Eventually the performance of having it together smothers the new version of yourself you’re trying to become.

Nature measures progress differently.

Once humans made room for natural wildlife to return, the whole coastline grew stronger. Restoration begins when we create the conditions for life to come back. It is never too late to create that kind of space for yourself.

I invite you to release your need for your growth to look a certain way + to explore who you become when you embrace your natural growth 🙏🏽

A human life should feel alive before it looks optimized.

Big shoutout to Santa Monica Relief & Donation & The Coastal Alliance for the sand dune education in Santa Monica + to Its Bigger Than Us for bringing all these communities together to clean the beach up!

We should’ve seen this coming.

Anthropic documented Claude’s behavior months ago.

It broke containment during testing. It got online + emailed a researcher + published a blog post.

Anthropic called the behavior insignificant. The warning stayed in the report. They let the world use their AI.

Now it’s hacking companies in the real world.

I think this is the bigger issue. Companies can identify the risk and keep shipping. The public carries the consequence.

Warnings mean very little when shipping stays cheaper than slowing down.

We need stronger testing before release. We also need clear liability when a documented risk becomes a real incident.

How much responsibility should a lab carry when it finds the risk and ships anyway?

AI has official escaped 😳

Anthropic’s Mythos model broke out of its training environment to gain access to the internet.

It checks to see if it’s being evaluated and edits its “reasoning” to hide what it’s doing from evaluators

We can’t tell the difference between AI that obeys + AI that pretends to obey…

We’ve lost control of AI ⚠️

Anthropic won’t release its new model because it’s too powerful

It hacked every web browser + operating system in 24 hours!

Anthropic created a council to decide what happens with this model.

OpenAI shut down Sora 🎬

The AI video app hit #1 on the App Store but couldn’t keep users

OpenAI’s competitors - Google and Alibaba - put video generation directly in their chatbots!

OpenAI shut down the Sora *app* but is rumored to be moving video generation inside of ChatGPT

OpenAI’s held the top spot in AI for years. Now they have to change strategy + products to keep that spot!

Countries reject American AI 🌎

Silicon Valley exports algorithms to governments it doesn’t control

Some leaders call this a form of digital colonization

Should one corner of the world build the AI that runs everywhere else?
