Check out our latest listing! $389,000.00 and open to offers. MMC had the opportunity to install a new engine remotely on this airplane a few years back and now it’s ready for a new owner.

Our crew has been doing a great job working in this summer heat. Our hangar hours are now 6:30-3:00 to maximize working in the cooler weather. Jeremy our DOM is finishing up a quality control inspection after a new engine install. If you swipe right you’ll see a hot section inspection and a rudder and elevator off for repair.

05/27/2021

ATTENTION!
Midwest Malibu Center will be starting summer hours next week for our hard working A&P’s to help beat the afternoon heat.
Hangar floor hours will be 6:30 am through 3:00 pm CST June through August
Office and Parts will be normal business hours 8:00 - 5:00 CST
Thank you.

Oil Samples
The engine is the beating heart of every aircraft. Unfortunately, much like a human heart, problems can develop deep within it that are difficult to detect during routine checkups. Ring-wear, cam erosion, and bearing degradation are all common problems that may not present with any recognizable symptoms before resulting in a sudden loss of performance or, worse, a catastrophic failure. Recently we have come to dread the removal of cylinders for the simple fact that it gives us a clear view of the camshaft, a large number of which exhibit severe pitting on the lobes. Surprises like this are dangerous and costly and when they are discovered during an annual or other routine maintenance event they dramatically increase the downtime of the aircraft.
Fortunately there is a relatively cheap solution to this that helps give us a clearer idea of what is going on in the unseen parts of your engine: oil samples. Our oil samples are available for both turbine and reciprocating operators and help to give us a clear idea of what components in your engine are experiencing wear and at what rate. The samples are analyzed by a lab specializing in aircraft engines where the technicians use the metallic particulate suspended in the oil to paint us a picture of the condition of the innermost parts of your engine. Based on this information we can provide recommendations on engine operation, estimate the life of various components, and more accurately schedule major maintenance events.
Keeping your engine in top form is a critical component of safe and efficient aircraft operation. Adding oil samples as a regularly scheduled maintenance event arms us with the knowledge to ensure that the heart of your aircraft is beating strong. To that end, we have decided to add an oil analysis sample to our list of standard annual inspection procedures for every piston engine. If you have any questions about our new oil sample collection policy or if you are a turbine operator and would like to see about adding oil samples to your annuals, give us a call at 620-728-1356 or send us an email at [email protected].

Static Wicks
First developed in 1946 by the Naval Research Laboratory, the static wick is an oft-overlooked airframe component that could end up costing you thousands in damage to sensitive avionics if not carefully maintained. Aircraft in flight are capable of building up enormous static charges across the airframe and if your static discharge system is not performing optimally that charge will release explosively through the extremities of the aircraft causing radio noise and potentially damaging avionics components. We have seen aircraft that discharge so poorly in flight that even touching the airframe after landing is enough to prompt a violent static shock.
Most pre-flight checks encourage the pilot to merely verify that there are no obviously broken static wicks on the aircraft’s control surfaces, however we have found that most failed static wicks do not present with any visible symptoms whatsoever! The filament at the center of the wick can often be damaged in ways that are undetectable without the proper test equipment. Aircraft that operate in environments conducive to corrosion can also experience buildup between the static wick base and the skin of the aircraft, further reducing the discharge capabilities of your static discharge system. We have found that a failure to discharge static has been particularly problematically in Meridians where the number of failed static wicks seems to correspond with an uptick in the number of failed electronic control modules.
At Midwest Malibu Center we use a specialized insulation tester to ensure that your static wicks maintain continuity and function at the proper resistance levels to guarantee a smooth static discharge. For aircraft that operate in environments conducive to corrosion, we can offer scheduled maintenance recommendations to ensure that oxidation in this critical location never has a chance to build up to harmful levels. If you have concerns about static build up in your aircraft, give us a call at 620-728-1356 or email us at [email protected] so we can discuss what options are available to protect your aircraft’s sensitive electronic systems from damage.

SureFly Ignition Module

The humble magneto has existed in some capacity for over a hundred years now and has been the core of ignition systems on everything from WWI biplanes to the most modern of high performance piston aircraft. The reliability and record of the traditional magneto is beyond repute, however as with any mechanical device it demands a certain degree of maintenance, and with the cost of aircraft components ever on the rise the ongoing maintenance expenses associated with keeping your mags in top form has never been higher. In recent days we have seen the overhaul cost on Slick magnetos in particular nearly eclipse the cost of simply purchasing a new unit entirely.
That is why we are excited to introduce a new option for our customers, the SureFly Ignition Module (SIM). The SIM is a self-contained solid-state device that directly replaces your number one magneto. Installation is as simple as removing your old Slick or Bendix magneto, bolting on the new SureFly unit, and running a power wire from your ship battery to the new SIM. SureFly has optimized the SIM for better starts and a more consistent spark which results in smoother operation at every level of operation. Best of all though, the Surefly Ignition Module requires no maintenance for 2400 hours; no overhauls, no distributor gears or timing points to replace, and no opportunity for maintenance-related magneto failures.
With the price of a SureFly Ignition Module currently very competitive with that of traditional mags, now is the perfect time to upgrade your aircraft to electronic ignition and start enjoying the benefits of smoother operation and reduced maintenance costs. We recently installed a SIM on our company aircraft and have been very pleased with its operation, noting much smoother engine operation and lower TIT temps. For more information, or to schedule your SureFly install, feel free to give us a call at 620-728-1356 or email Kerry Burt at [email protected]
