Middlebury College has been selected to participate in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 competition! Over the next two years, dedicated Middlebury students will strategically plan for, design, market, and construct a second net zero solar-powered home, InSite. Learn more about InSite:

Our Team:
90 students
25 states
11 countries
30 different academic disciplines

Our liberal arts education allows us to approach this project with a multiplicity of perspectives and a host of diverse values and ideas. We work in five sub-teams: Outreach, Finance, Design, Construction, and Research/Engineering. Each sub-team, students address unique aspects of production. Our Concept:
InSite is founded upon the concept of "infill," which calls for the revitalization of underutilized or neglected space within communities. after the 2013 competition, which will take place in Irvine, California, we plan to bequeath our home to a college-owned lot in Middlebury. Our team values the recycling of preexisting lots as a progressive solution to suburban sprawl – a major contributor to environmental degradation. By “filling in” underused space, InSite aims to revitalize its neighborhood and support community growth. We hope that InSite will inspire its inhabitants to engage with their surroundings and form meaningful relationships with their neighbors, reducing their carbon footprints by “living close to home.” We believe that when individuals live close to home, the strength of our communities brings the world closer to a sustainable future.

How time flies, it seems like only yesterday we were in Irvine, CA presenting InSite and now there are only five months to go to Solar Decathlon 2015! We can't wait to see what this year's teams have come up with. Lucky for us, the DOE recently posted the first renderings and walkthroughs of the 2015 houses!
