🚀 Long time no post! I’ve been heads-down building BudgetSync, a backend first budgeting app designed for real-world financial tracking. Next step: deploying it on Render with PostgreSQL and Redis, excited to see it fully live.

Love hearing from fellow devs or finance nerds: what features would you want in a smart budgeting tool? 💡

I’ve started an applied machine learning project focused on water main break risk, using public asset data from the City of Toronto.

What interested me wasn’t prediction accuracy, but the role ML can realistically play in infrastructure decision-making. In many U.S. cities, asset-level water main data suitable for modeling simply isn’t publicly released, which makes certain types of analysis impossible regardless of technique.

Toronto stood out because it publishes asset-level data in a form that’s usable for modeling, not just mapping.

This project is in the early-stages and exploratory phase. I’m documenting the approach, constraints, and tradeoffs as it develops, with an emphasis on decision support rather than abstract metrics.

The call came in this morning: a pipe break at a treatment plant. Crews were already managing the immediate impacts, but the real story…

I’m excited to share a new project I’ve been building: Weather Storm Event Analysis 🌪

Using NOAA’s massive storm events dataset, I’m exploring and modeling the impacts of hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes. The project applies data science (EDA, visualization, trend analysis) and machine learning (regression, classification, risk modeling) to predict property damage and casualty risk.

A key focus is on infrastructure resiliency — translating storm impact data into insights that can support water systems, power grids, and community planning. By separating hazards, normalizing historical costs into 2025 USD, and running tailored models per storm type, the analysis aims to provide clearer, actionable risk metrics.

This is still a work in progress, but it’s shaping up to be a showcase project that connects machine learning with real-world civil infrastructure challenges.

Uses NOAA storm event database to analyze and predict property damage or casualties from storm features (wind speed, duration, location). Bonus will be to tie into infrastructure resilience (water...

I made some significant updates to my website. Added a Backend Journal, for any coders out there interested in backend development. It is meant to be more technical.

I also updated my projects page to go into more detail on current and upcoming project details. Once I deploy, I'll make updates here.

Please feel free to check out my site and share this post if you like what you see!

🚧 Civil Engineers & Backend Devs — This One’s for You 💻📐
Ever been in a meeting where someone asks, "What’s that going to cost?" and you have to dig through spreadsheets, old bid tabs, and half-broken systems just to say, “Well... it depends”?

I’ve lived that frustration more times than I can count, and I finally decided to do something about it.

🔥 I’m building Cost Query Pro, a backend system to help engineers query historical costs, normalize unit prices, and make smarter budget calls.
The first blog post in the series is live:

👉 Building a Backend for Engineering Cost Estimation — Part 1
This isn’t just another FastAPI tutorial. It’s a real-world dev journey from an engineer who’s been in the trenches, and decided to pick up backend dev tools to solve a real pain point.
📖 Read the story, share your thoughts, and follow along if you’ve ever wanted to blend code with civil infrastructure:

🚧 Project Delays and the FOIL Factor: Lessons from the Trenches

I’m in the middle of a side civil infrastructure project that’s currently paused, not because of design, funding, or permitting, but because I’m waiting on a FOIL request. Yep. The data I need is technically public, but it’s stuck in the slow-moving gears of government processing.

So I wrote about it.
- What is FOIL?
- Why it matters for engineers and planners
- How to plan around the inevitable delays
- A FOIL-ready project checklist
- And what to do while you wait so your project doesn't stall out

If you’ve ever had a FOIL request disappear into the bureaucratic void, you’re not alone. Let’s talk about how we can work with the process instead of getting blindsided by it.

If I had a dollar for every time I checked my inbox for an update on my FOIL request, I could fund a private research team to go dig…
