Methanol and e-methanol/green methanol are emerging as leaders for alternative fuels, but ensuring the volumes necessary for the shipping industry remains a concern.

Companies such as Maersk Group have said while they will have vessels ready to run on methanol in two years’ time, they doubt there will be a sufficient supply of the fuel.

More companies are moving quickly to build the global supply of methanol.

Among the latest entrants into the market to produce large quantities of e-methanol are Spanish energy giant Iberdrola and Danish renewable energy company Ørsted, most recognized for its development of wind farms.

Iberdrola announced plans for what it is calling one of the largest hydrogen/methanol plants in the world to be located in Tasmania, Australia, while Ørsted is taking full ownership of a project in northern Sweden which it reports will be the largest green e-methanol project in Europe.

“It’s a way to continue our own economic sustainability and keep some of those profits within our own tribes and ecosystems,” said Monica King, CEO of GLI. “The significance of being able to provide those services internally is important.”

Three Native American tribes in Michigan have created a construction and real estate development joint venture that the collaborators say is the first of its kind in the Midwest.

The team, which announced the new firm last month, is still developing its longer-term strategy but already has some projects lined up, including a large retail, healthcare, housing and manufacturing development north of Gun Lake Casino in Wayland, Michigan. Aki has plans for other undisclosed jobs that it says will be shovel-ready in the spring.

The three entities behind AKI Construction are:
Odawa Economic Affairs Holding Corp., the business development group for the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians.

Mno-Bmadsen, the non-gaming investment arm of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians.

Gun Lake Investments, the economic development corporation for the Gun Lake Tribe.

South Carolina Department of Transportation just celebrated the I-526 LCC Community Advisory Council that volunteered their time and efforts on the I-526 Lowcountry Corridor Project to help build the Community Mitigation Plan.

The Community member's VOICE and PERSPECTIVE was critical to creating an equitable mitigation plan that balances the transportation mobility needs of the region with local community needs.

Everyone brought their whole selves to this process and trusted to listen and use their perspectives to drive the project decision making.

This community mitigation plan is breaking the mold and modernizing how we acquire Right of Way and address Affordable Housing on large infrastructure projects.

This young lady was the 1st CDL program graduate under the job training mitigation program!

“Our deepening project was completed faster than any other project of its kind in the nation. It required tremendous dedication, collaboration and creativity from everyone involved over the past decade. We had an amazing project partner — the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District — as well as the dredging companies, environmental groups and business partners who worked alongside us. Thank you to Governor Henry McMaster, the SC Legislature, our Congressional delegation and the Obama and Trump Administrations for fully funding this transformational project.” - SC Ports President and CEO Barbara Melvin

At 52 feet, the biggest ships calling the East Coast can access South Carolina Ports’ terminals any time, any tide. Ships filled with record imports and heavy exports can seamlessly sail through Charleston Harbor to SC Ports’ terminals.

Envision AESC, a Japan-based major manufacturer of electric vehicle battery technology, will invest $810 million to build a battery cell gigafactory in Florence County. The project will create an estimated 1,170 new jobs and support the company’s multi-year partnership with the BMW Group.

The plant will measure approximately 1.5 million square feet and will be located in an 870-acre technology and commerce park in Florence.

“South Carolina has been an automotive manufacturing powerhouse for over 30 years, and Envision AESC’s decision to establish operations in Florence County and to create thousands of jobs shows that we will continue to be one for years to come,” said S.C. Governor Henry McMaster.

“Our partnership with Florence County is part of our next phase battery strategy to power next generation EVs in the U.S.,” AESC Group CEO Shoichi Matsumoto said in a statement. “This facility is another milestone on our journey to building an electrification network in the U.S. and strengthens our commitment to grow the electrification supply chain while providing high value jobs for the community for years to come.”

“We’ve experienced an enormous growth of women in construction across the board,” said Rafael Villegas, executive director of the Georgia Hispanic Construction Association. “Way back when, you wouldn’t see a woman in the trades, in upper management, or even running the business. Now, women have a strong presence in every field.”
