Mammoth Solar

Mammoth Solar Welcome to the page for Mammoth Solar, a solar photovoltaic (PV) project planned for Kanawha County, WV.

Designed to produce as much as 90 megawatts (MW) of power. Mammoth Solar is a proposed solar project capable of producing 250 MW of energy in Kanawha County, WV.

The number of solar-generating facilities in West Virginia continues to grow, with roughly 208 megawatts of solar installed across the Mountain State, enough to power over 20,000 homes. We anticipate Mammoth Solar will start producing power starting in late 2028.

Solar is simple to construct, easy to operate and will bring a range of benefits to Kanawha County to support critical community needs.

What is the grid and who is PJM?

In PJM’s own words:
“We’re sometimes called air traffic controllers of the power grid. PJM monitors and coordinates more than 1,400 generating sources and 88,333 miles of high-voltage transmission lines [on the regional electric grid serving West Virginia]. Just like air traffic controllers, we don’t own the equipment we direct. Others own the power lines and the power plants.”

Building on the state’s proud legacy of powering the nation, MN8’s Mammoth Solar will provide as much as 90 megawatts of new solar generating capacity, with the potential to also include battery energy storage at the site. That’s enough additional energy to power approximately 13,000 typical homes in the Mountain State.

Thank you to those who came out for the first mobile office. The next one will be scheduled for early October. Watch our page for the date and location and until then, visit our website for more information about Mammoth Solar, which is part of the MN8 Energy family.

MN8 Energy plans to invest upwards of $1 billion by 2030 to develop new energy production in the Mountain State. This will bring jobs and revenue to support education and public services, and while strengthening the region’s energy grid by expanding its supply of homegrown energy, bolstering West Virginia’s position as an energy powerhouse. The Mammoth Solar Project is part of this and will bring an investment of more than $200 million to Kanawha County.

Today we had the honor of hosting a town hall meeting with Mammoth Solar and local leaders in the Government, Healthcare, Education, and Economic Development about their proposal to develop a solar project on a former piece of strip mine in the area. They will be hosting community Q&As as the project gets off the ground.

For questions please reach out to them directly using their contact info found on their page.

Welcome to the page for Mammoth Solar, a solar photovoltaic (PV) project planned for Kanawha County, WV. Designed to produce as much as 90 megawatts (MW) of power, the project will provide up to an estimated $3.5 million in new county tax revenue for the first 20 years of operations and boost the regional grid with enough output to support approximately 13,000 average-size homes in the Mountain State.

American energy demand continues to increase and is projected to grow by 25% by 2030, and demand on the regional electricity transmission system (PJM) -- will grow at a similar rate. During that period, PJM’s peak load in summer months is projected to increase by nearly 30,000 MW, the equivalent of 30 new large nuclear units. As the region’s need for power grows, every bit of generating capacity is needed to ensure all users—households, businesses, healthcare providers, and others — can access reliable, affordable energy when and where they need it.

Solar energy works in tandem with other energy generation sources in ways that will contribute to a stronger electric grid for all users.
