Science and Art - 2016 , was the location of the 13th International Coral Reef Symposium . Over 2500 coral reef scientists, policy makers and managers from 97 nations met in . The , from the Dr. Judy Lemus made during the event. This one has some great info from one of the oral sessions on June 20th. Even though the event is past, check out to catch up with from around the world! The 14th symposium, , is in Germany!

Labeling Species of Fish. This is what fish proteins look like after electrophoresis with brilliant blue Coomassie protein stain to highlight the protein bands. Electrophoresis separates different sized molecules. Closely related species will have more same-sized proteins in common.

UH students are working with Cornell U. researchers to study herbivorous fish gut microbiota. Why, you ask? Well, these bugs are important! They help certain species of tropical marine surgeonfish breakdown and digest algae, which helps contribute to carbon cycling. One such bacterium is called, Epulopiscium, which means "guest at a banquet of a fish"!
