A peek at Biltmore's sub-basement (accessible on our "Premium Biltmore House Tour") where the original heating and power equipment still stand. Notwithstanding its 65 fireplaces, Biltmore House was centrally heated unlike the vast majority of rural residences of its era.
The three large boilers built by Kewanee Boiler Company in Illinois were equipped to burn wood and chunk coal. In 1906, Mr. Vanderbilt converted the middle boiler to stoker coal, a much hotter burning coal than the original fuel.
