High Heat Demand & Carbon Monoxide Safety

When it’s extremely cold outside, heating systems run longer and harder. This increases the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) if equipment is dirty, damaged, or not venting properly.

Why Cold Weather Increases Risk
•Furnaces and boilers operate continuously, increasing wear and exhaust output
•Snow and ice can block vents and chimneys
•Poor airflow or cracked heat exchangers can allow CO to enter living spaces
•Closed windows and doors trap gases indoors

How to Stay Safe
•Make sure CO detectors are working and tested regularly
•Keep all exhaust vents clear of snow and debris
•Never use ovens, grills, or space heaters not designed for indoor use
•Have heating equipment inspected and serviced annually.

Some snow is fine, but lugging 200 pounds of tools a mile to get to the Condenser sounds like a real pain. Sure it's not a mile but it feels like it!

As everyone gets ready for this weekend and the weekdays ahead, here are a few things to consider. Snow can be fun. One thing I do know is that it’s going to be very cold!

❄️ High-Efficiency Gas Furnaces (90%+)
• Keep exhaust vent pipes clear of snow and ice
• Sidewall vents can freeze from condensation
• Vents less than 2 ft off the ground are more prone to issues
• Wind and extended cold can affect operation

❄️ Heat Pumps
• Clear snow and ice from around the outdoor unit
• Do not use sharp objects or shovels
• Steam/vapor during defrost is usually normal

❄️ Outside Spigots / Hose Bibs
• Even frost-free spigots can freeze
• Shut off interior valves if available and drain lines
