Just a reminder to people out there!!!

ALERT :

If you’ve got a heat pump and your outdoor unit is turning into an ice cube after freezing rain, don’t keep forcing it to run like normal.

Do this before you burn up the system:

• Switch your thermostat to “Emergency Heat” (or “EM Heat”)

• Leave it there until temps rise and the ice can melt off naturally

• Do not chip at the ice with a shovel, hammer, or screwdriver

• Do not pour hot water on it

• If your indoor vents start blowing cool air or it’s making angry noises, shut it off and call HVAC

Emergency Heat basically tells the system: “Stop trying to pull heat from an ice block outside. Use the backup heat inside instead.”

If you’re in an area that got freezing rain, send this to somebody who owns a heat pump.

This is one of those “cheap fix now, expensive repair later” situations.

Don’t forget to get your unit serviced or it will end up looking like this. It may be running but always get it checked out and cleaned up. This can cause a fire if not serviced and checked!!
