When do you change your HVAC filter?
Generally, it's recommended to replace your HVAC air filter every 1 to 3 months, but factors like filter type, pet ownership, and air quality can influence the frequency. A good rule of thumb is to visually inspect the filter monthly and replace it if it appears dirty or clogged.
Factors:
Several factors can impact how often you need to change your filter:
Pet Ownership: Pets shed hair and dander, which can clog filters faster, requiring more frequent replacements (every 2-3 months).
Air Quality: If you have allergies, asthma, or other respiratory issues, you may need to change filters more frequently (every 2-3 months).
Home Occupancy: Higher home occupancy generally means more dust and debris, leading to faster filter clogging.
Filter Type: Fiberglass filters are less expensive but need to be replaced more frequently (every 1-3 months). Pleated filters are more expensive but last longer (3-6 months).
Visual Inspection:
Check your filter monthly. If it's hard to see through or looks dirty, it's time to replace it.
Signs of a Dirty Filter:
Increased energy bills.
Decreased airflow.
Dust and dirt accumulation around vents.
Worsening of allergies or asthma symptoms.
Overheating AC unit.
