Good morning. With the impending ice storm headed our way, it is important to discuss a couple of things that can help you get through this and stay warm.
1. If you have a dual fuel system and still have power, switch your system to gas heat. Ice could cover the condenser outside and cause it to not work in heat pump mode. This can happen if ice covers the top of the condenser and blocks the fan/blades from working.
2 if you are on propane, make sure to check your tanks. You need enough in the tanks to get you through th ice storm because travel could be dangerous.
3. If you have gas central heat, you can run it with a generator and still keep your house nice and comfortable if the power goes out.
4. If you have a heat pump only central system to heat your house, you will need a larger generator to run it. Your condenser may still be out of action due to ice coverage but you can run your emergency heat strips if you have a properly sized generator.
5. If you experience a power outage, only open the fridge and freezer as a necessity. This will keep food colder for longer.
Finally, please do everything you can to stay warm. We will have some very cold temps for our area and we are not used to it. Check on your neighbors and watch out for power lines and trees downed. Big Ice accumulation does major damage. Stay indoors if you can.
