Happy birthday to my Old Man.
One of the most savage and badass men I’ve ever met.
A man of integrity. A man of honor. A man who taught me the importance of earning your own and the value of building yourself.
He taught me that taking advantage of people isn’t how you get ahead in life. He taught me that if I was willing to work hard enough, sacrifice, and stay committed, I could build damn near anything.
He gave me an awesome life as a kid, but when I became an adult, his words were simple:
“You better figure it out, Gavin.”
Those words stuck with me.
When I was young, I was BAD. I did the exact opposite of most of the things he warned me about. I wasn’t an easy teenager to raise. Truth is, there was no controlling me. I had to learn the hard way and figure s**t out for myself.
But even when I wasn’t listening to his words, I was watching his actions.
I watched how he moved.
I watched how he provided.
I watched how he sacrificed for his family.
I watched him work his ass off without expecting anybody else to carry his weight.
Because of that, hard work became normal to me.
Providing became normal. Sacrifice became normal. Figuring s**t out instead of expecting someone else to save me became normal.
It took me getting older to fully understand just how much of the man I became was shaped by watching the man he already was.
Happy birthday, Dad.
You told me to figure it out.
I’m still figuring it out every damn day—but you gave me one hell of an example to follow.
