Trying to “fix” comfort problems by closing dampers.

That increases static pressure, reduces airflow, and often makes the problem worse.

And oversized ductwork isn’t the answer either.

Low air velocity means poor air distribution, weak air mixing, and hot or cold spots throughout the home.

Comfort problems aren’t always equipment problems.
Many start with duct design and airflow.

One of the coolest things about HVAC:
There is no single definition of success.

Some people love installs.
Some love diagnostics.
Some move into sales.
Some build teams.
Some launch companies.
Some move into distribution, manufacturing, or energy programs.

We’re interviewing people across all of these paths for an upcoming HVAC careers book designed to help the next generation enter the trade with clarity and confidence.

Priority interview roles still needed:
• Apprentices
• Lead installers
• Service managers
• Comfort advisors
• Distributor reps
• Manufacturer reps
• Utility program leaders
• Recent business owners

Running around all day doesn’t build a strong HVAC business.

Clear systems do.
Defined processes do.
Trained people do.

If everything feels chaotic, it’s not a workload problem — it’s a leadership problem.

• what great companies look like
• what long-term opportunity exists in this industry

That’s the mission behind this book project.

Currently interviewing:
• Apprentices
• Lead installers
• Service managers
• Comfort advisors
• Distributor reps
• Manufacturer reps
• Utility program managers
• Contractors who started their business within the last 5 years

If you know somebody whose story belongs in this conversation, send them my way.

Oversized systems cause most of the problems.

If one room is uncomfortable, equipment size probably isn't the issue.

But when a system is oversized, it short cycles, struggles with humidity control, and leaves homeowners feeling clammy even when the thermostat says everything is fine.

A little oversized may be acceptable.

A lot oversized creates comfort problems year-round.

That's why proper load calculations matter.

The contractors with the most predictable lead flow usually aren't the cheapest.

They're the most trusted.

They educate.
They demonstrate expertise.
They build authority long before the customer calls.

That's how you stop chasing leads and start attracting them.

Too many contractors still size systems by square footage or “what was there before.”

Then come the callbacks.

Wrong load calculations, bad insulation assumptions, inaccurate infiltration rates, and oversized safety factors all lead to one thing:
An oversized system that can’t control humidity properly.

And that “just in case” buffer?
It often becomes the reason the customer is uncomfortable.

One of the biggest stresses in HVAC business ownership?

Not knowing where next month’s work is coming from.

Too many contractors live in a cycle of:
Busy → Slow → Panic → Repeat.

Predictable lead flow comes from becoming known for something bigger than “we install HVAC.”

The contractors who stay consistently booked position themselves differently:
• They educate customers
• They showcase expertise
• They focus on system performance
• They build trust before the sales call even happens

That’s what separates businesses with stable growth from businesses constantly chasing the next job.

If you want more consistency, better customers, and fewer slow months:
