Cayuga Data Campus

Cayuga Data Campus The official information page for the Cayuga Data Campus in Lansing, NY. TeraWulf Inc.

is transforming the retired Cayuga coal plant site – idle for more than five years despite its significant footprint and valuable infrastructure – into a state-of-the-art data campus purpose-built for global cloud, artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) companies. The project is expected to create hundreds of permanent jobs, generate significant new tax revenue, expand h

igh-speed local fiber, strengthen transmission infrastructure, and drive long-term economic growth for Lansing and the broader region. Scale & Infrastructure: Redevelopment of ~180 acres (less than half the site), with phased buildout of 50 MW in 2026 and expansion to 138 MW, as approved by NYISO. Clean Energy Advantage: Located in Western NY, where ~90% of grid electricity is zero-carbon and substantial surplus power is available. High-Quality Jobs: More than 500 construction jobs expected during buildout and ~100 permanent skilled positions once operational. Timing: Initial operations targeted for late 2026, with staged buildout through 2028/2029. Community Benefits: Millions in new property tax revenue expected, plus a $100,000 annual community fund to support schools, parks, and local initiatives. New York’s Just Transition Working Group has identified former coal plant sites like Cayuga as ideal for reuse, particularly for data centers that bring jobs, investment, and tax growth. World-Class Tenants: Designed for long-term (10+ years) hosting agreements with leading global technology companies.

Recent commentary suggesting that large data centers automatically increase local energy bills misses some critical facts about how the New York power system actually works.

This webinar segment directly addresses those misconceptions. As Mike Mager explains, Cayuga’s operations are not expected to increase interconnection costs or base delivery rates for local customers. In fact, by adding substantial, predictable kilowatt-hour demand, the project can help spread fixed grid costs more efficiently—an outcome that can support long-term rate stability.

For those interested in a fact-based discussion grounded in grid economics and regulatory realities, we encourage you to watch the full replay of our recent community webinar.

We’re grateful for the constructive dialogue and positive outcome at the Cayuga ZBA. This milestone reflects the value of open communication and collaboration with local leaders.

We look forward to continuing to work closely with the Town Planning Board, the Town Board, and community stakeholders as the project moves ahead—ensuring it aligns with local priorities and delivers long-term benefits for the community.

This clip from our recent webinar illustrates the meaningful impact smart, strategic development can have on a community—lowering the local tax burden while positioning it for long-term economic strength.

Here, Brett breaks down the projected tax benefits for Lansing residents if the Cayuga site were to advance into development. Phase-one estimates demonstrate that the expanded tax base could meaningfully reduce the average household’s annual property tax.

In this segment from our recent webinar, Mike Mager explains what Cayuga’s operations mean for energy costs in the region.

Looking ahead, he notes that the project should NOT drive up interconnection costs or base delivery rates for other customers.

In fact, by adding more kilowatt-hour demand to the system, the facility could actually help spread fixed costs more efficiently—creating potential long-term benefits for consumers.

Mike also highlights that any impact on wholesale energy prices is expected to be minimal – limited mainly to the highest-priced hours of the year – and any effects would be distributed broadly across load zones A through E, rather than concentrated in Lansing.

It’s a reassuring look at how the project fits into the broader energy landscape—and why local customers shouldn’t expect negative cost impacts.

Ahead of Tonight’s Webinar 💻

We’re sharing a helpful resource for anyone with questions about how the Cayuga Data Campus may affect local energy costs. Below is the link to an energy brief prepared by Couch White LLP, an Albany-based energy law firm, that explains what to expect when a large new customer connects to the grid.

In short, the paper covers:
• Who pays for interconnection upgrades (answer: the Data Campus, not residents)
• How delivery rates are set and why a large load can lower per-kWh surcharges over time
• What drives supply prices in NYISO
• The broader economic benefit to Lansing

We’ve received a few questions about why Tuesday’s webinar is limited to Lansing residents and why we’re encouraging questions in advance. Here’s the quick explanation:

Lansing residents specifically asked for a session focused on their concerns, and we want to honor that. Because they are the community most directly affected by the project, this webinar is designed to give them dedicated time and space for their questions. We chose a virtual format to make it easier for residents to participate during a busy holiday season.

We absolutely recognize that the project’s impact extends beyond Lansing, and we will continue to host additional info sessions for the broader community.

We’re encouraging questions in advance as this allows us to organize topics efficiently, incorporate them in the broader discussion, and ensure residents receive clear, thorough responses. There will still be a live Q&A at the end.

Thank you for the continued engagement — it genuinely shapes how we show up and communicate.

We look forward to a productive conversation on Tuesday.

Update on the Independent Assessment of the Cayuga Data Campus

Lansing resident Dr. Sarah Kreps and Cornell engineering professor Dr. Chris Earls completed an independent, third-party assessment of the proposed Cayuga Data Campus. This review covers environmental, fiscal, workforce, and community impacts based on data — not speculation.

Dr. Kreps isn’t just a credentialed scholar — she lives in Lansing. Her family swims in Cayuga Lake. She brings the perspective of both a national-caliber researcher and a neighbor who cares about this community.

To address some misinformation directly:
👉 Yes — TeraWulf paid for the assessment. Just as any independent engineer or consultant is paid for their work.
👉 No — payment does not influence the findings. The engagement agreement explicitly prohibits TeraWulf from influencing the Council’s methodology or conclusions.
👉 No — TeraWulf has no relationship or agreement with Cornell, in any form. Claims that Dr. Kreps is conflicted because she works at Cornell are false. Her role here is strictly as an independent evaluator.

The purpose of the Advisory Council is simple: to give Lansing residents clear, impartial information based on facts and expert analysis — not opinion, rumor, or fear.

We encourage residents to read the report directly and ask questions. Transparency remains our priority as the process continues.
