OCTOBER CHEMICAL OF THE MONTH – Trimethylaluminum

Trimethylaluminum (TMA) is a pyrophoric (ignites when exposed to air) liquid used primarily in semiconductor manufacturing. TMA is also classified as an Unstable Reactive Class 2, Water Reactive Class 3, and Corrosive. Since there are multiple hazard classifications, the most stringent will apply when determining the maximum allowable quantity.

Most model codes require fire sprinklers in any buildings storing or utilizing pyrophorics. Additionally, the allowed storage quantity is less than 1 gallon before Group H occupancy provisions or other hazard mitigation features must be followed. Remember to always thoroughly review your SDS and check your local codes before implementing any hazmat code requirements. APRIL CHEMICAL OF THE MONTH – Titanium powder

Titanium powder is an odorless dark gray powder. Its uses include aircraft components, missiles, welding rods, and surgical appliances. It is classified as a Flammable Solid, Combustible Dust, and Water Reactive Class 2. Since there are multiple hazard classifications, the most stringent will apply when determining the maximum allowable quantity (MAQ). Since it is classified as a Combustible Dust, use of titanium powder may also require a Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA).

Most model codes limit the indoor storage of Water Reactive Class 2 solids to 50 pounds. The MAQ storage amount can be increased or decreased based on storage configuration, floor level, and presence of fire sprinklers. Remember to always thoroughly review your SDS and check your local codes before implementing any hazmat code requirements. TheHazMatApp is available for free at the Apple App Store and Google Play.

JANUARY CHEMICAL OF THE MONTH – Ethanolamine

Ethanolamine is a colorless, thick liquid, with a mild ammonia-like odor. It has a variety of uses including manufacturing of cosmetics and gas purification. It is classified as Corrosive and also as a Combustible Liquid Class IIIB based on its flash point. In certain applications the MAQ for Combustible Liquid Class IIIB can be unlimited when the building is protected with automatic fire sprinklers; however, in this case the MAQ for Corrosive would apply since it is the most restrictive. As such, the total amount would be limited to 500 gallons.

The storage amount can be increased or decreased based on storage configuration, floor level, and presence of fire sprinklers. Remember to always thoroughly review your SDS and check your local codes before implementing any hazmat code requirements.
