The Brigid Murphy Carport was completed during the winter. Over the last couple of days I finally have taken some photos of it with everything in bloom in (and around) Brigid’s beautifully landscaped and planted yard.

I was in Wamego KS today. The kayak lockers for Friends of the Kaw are one year old and still looking good. Fingers crossed I will get to build some more of them someday soon.

The Murphy Carport is assembled. Three good friends help me to put it up and get the roof on. All that is left is some minor paint touch ups, the final inspection (no worries about that) and Brigid's landscaping plans happening this spring. The water from the roof will fall into a bed of river rock so it can be absorbed into her very nicely planted backyard without causing erosion. There will also be rock around the base of the columns. I will take more photos then. Trees will be green, flowers out etc.
Brigid was a great client who told me what she wanted, was easy to talk to and share ideas with, and then trusted me to figure it out and make it work.

The Murphy Carport foundation is in! Poured the concrete yesterday, just beating winter getting serious with us. The wood structure is low tech way to assure the footings are in square and at the right elevation.

New Sain Works Garden/Yard Furniture

While waiting for the building permit to build the carport I am working on I made a series of outdoor furniture. Two benches and two tables with an upper and lower top. They are made of smooth cedar 2x6’s and steel that has been galvanized. The galvanized steel will last outside for decades and the cedar for a very long time. The cedar boards can be replaced easily in the future if needed.

The benches are 18 ½ inches high 6 foot long and 14 inches wide. The square table is 34” tall and the tabletops are 15 x 18 inches. The table with the triangular leg is 32 ½” tall and the upper tabletop is 15 x 18 inches and lower one 13 x 15 inches.

Making custom furniture with high quality materials and finishes makes it hard to keep the cost down and still be worth the time. I try to create designs I can quickly fabricate to help stay in the Pottery Barn neighborhood. If you have any friends with a yard or garden that might like to have something like this pass the information along. I like making these types of things and am trying to work out a network for selling them. I think there will be interest if I can get the word out to the right people. I can’t expect my friends to buy all of them.
I will deliver to addresses within an hour or so of the shop in DeSoto Kansas.

Perfect day for shop work with south sun flooding in. The carport project is underway. Steel column parts are being cut to size.

In May a friend and neighbor in Old West Lawrence ask me if would like to design and build a carport for her. That started months long process of getting the design through the historic review process and the building permit submittal. Finally we have a building permit. Steel is ordered and fabrication will begin soon.

I recently finished casting the concrete for another birdbath so I again have one for sale. It is available for $200. You can go to the ever change "for sale" part of this FB page or you can go my website for the other items for sale. I hope to soon have my things in a shop or two in town. They will probably cost more then. As of now I am motivated to get things out of shop. If you are interested either comment or send a private message and we can work out the details. You are also welcome to view it first if you are in the Lawrence/DeSoto area.

This birdbath is made with a galvanized welded steel base and the cast in place concrete bowl. A drain hole is located in the base of the bath so it can easily be emptied for cleaning and adding fresh water. A rubber plug is used when filling the bowl. It comes with river rocks which not only creates visual interest but numerous perches for various birds, insects and animals as they use the birdbath.
