Once again, we are seeing a lot of iced-over air conditioners lately. Here's a little to help avoid that!
There are 3 things that can cause an air conditioner to freeze up...
* Lack of air flow
Make sure your furnace filter is clean, the outdoor unit is clean and not gunked up with leaves and poplar fuzzies (common this time of year), and make sure your vents are open.
* Thermostat set too low
Anytime it is set below 72, you run the risk of freezing up. The indoor coil maintains a temp about 40ยฐ cooler than the air going through it. So, if you set it below 72ยฐ (72-40=32=freezing), it can freeze any water or condensation in there.
* Low on refrigerant
For this, you need a licensed HVAC company to come out and check. Please feel free to call us at 517-908-2033 anytime you have a question. As long as your a/c does not take the old R-22 refrigerant, we can top it off for you (and if it does, we can convert it to the newer, cheaper type of refrigerant).
Once your air conditioner freezes (or the lines from it to the house), all you can do is turn the air conditioner off, turn the fan switch (on your thermostat) on, and wait at least 12 hours for it to thaw. There's no way we can check it out or diagnose anything while it's frozen, so give us a call, and we'll come see you the following day.
