Marianna Vaiman, CEO of V&R Energy, and Venkat (Sharma) Kolluri, Manager at Entegy will co-chair the Plenary Session “Challenges of Decarbonization in Planning and Operating the Electric Grid” at the IEEE Power & Energy Society ISGT North America 2022.

As the electric utilities attempt to achieve their ambitious decarbonization goals in the upcoming years, the electric grid is going to be faced with several challenges, including rapid pe*******on of renewable generation and retirement of legacy generating units, electric vehicle integration, increased need of coordinated generation, transmission and distribution planning and challenges with grid operations, among others. Key strategic changes have to occur in the way we design and plan the transmission and distribution systems in order to maintain the security, resilience, reliability, and stability of the electric power systems. The plenary session will discuss these challenges and changes that are taking place in the electric utility industry and provide the vision and perspectives of the industry leaders and experts from around the globe on how to address these complex issues.

The Plenary Session, organized by IEEE PES Corporate Engagement Program (CEP), will be held on April 25th from 9:30am – 10:30am CT, Room 391-392 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

OUR HISTORY

While many POM users are currently in the process of performing massive contingency analysis as a part of their NERC-compliance studies, we found this article dating back to 2007 in Rural Electric Magazine about the speed of POM calculations. This is as important now as it was 15 years ago, especially with the size of the models and the number of analyzed contingencies constantly increasing. Though these calculations are now multi-threaded, single-thread performance is still an important factor affecting the ex*****on time of these massive runs.

Meet The Team🙌

Dr. Mark Povolotskiy is the Senior Support Engineer, celebrating his 21 years at V&R Energy!🥳

Mark’s areas of expertise include mathematical modeling of the power system networks, deterministic and probabilistic approaches to the analysis of the power system; software customization and support; and user training.

Mark, the most experienced POM user in the world 😊, has helped several generations of engineers to customize and run NERC TPL studies, perform automated cascading analysis, customize AC transfer studies, and automate the construction of seasonal nomograms among many projects and customizations that he has been involved in the last few decades.
Over the years, Mark trained thousands of engineers not only how to run POM and ROSE in the most effective way, but also how to understand and apply concepts, like steady-state stability analysis, power system optimization, and risk-based approaches.

When he is not working on improving the reliability of the grid, Mark enjoys his other passion – growing cacti🌵 He has over 150 different species of cacti and other succulents in his garden.
We are very fortunate to have Mark as a key team member!

Congratulations, Mark and hope your 21st anniversary is Twenty-ONEderful!🔥

The IEEE Board of Directors at its November 2021 meeting elevated V&R Energy’s founder and CIO, Michael Vaiman, to IEEE Fellow “for contributions to methods and software for real-time analysis and control of electric power systems”. Less than 0.1% of IEEE voting members are selected annually for this member grade elevation.

Congratulations, Michael, on this outstanding achievement! We are very proud and honored to have you as our leader and mentor!

Thank you to everybody who participated in Michael’s nomination.

On November 2, 20021, DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, on behalf of the Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO), announced nine new national lab-directed projects to advance the HydroWIRES (Water Innovation for a Resilient Electricity System) Initiative.
HydroWIRES aims to maximize hydropower’s contributions to a decarbonized, reliable, and resilient grid.

V&R Energy is honored and excited to be a part of the project “A Framework for Addressing Hydropower Modeling Gaps in Grid Planning and Operation Studies” led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Project Partners are National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory.
This project will provide a critical update to dynamic models of hydropower generators that were developed in the 1960s and 1970s. Researchers will also develop tools that provide an accurate, updated representation of water availability and hydropower generation constraints in different models. These accurate representations will allow system planners and operators a more realistic understanding of operating reserves, resulting in fewer unexpected outages.
