Nokia Touts Renewable Energy Progress
As the tech industry becomes increasingly vocal on climate change, Nokia â which the corporate environmental coalition RE100 deemed best newcomer to the group in 2022 â is putting its bloggers to work publicizing the network operatorâs position on climate issues.
Nokia has committed to match 100% of its global electricity use with renewable energy generation by 2025, and the company is âon track to reach our target of 60% renewable electricity in 2022,â according to Yanic Ziebel, Nokiaâs Head of Workplace Management.
Nokia invests in a variety of renewable energy sourcing options to meet its targets, including on-site solar; power purchase agreements, which are renewable energy contracts between a generator and Nokia; green contracts, which represent renewable electricity obtained directly from an energy supplier; and energy attribute certificates or guarantees of origin, which provide certification that power bought and used by Nokia is indeed generated from renewable sources.
But one of the companyâs major challenges is the scope of its global operations. Nokia is present in more than 120 countries, âwhich can present a challenge to source and use high quality renewable electricity instruments across the world,â Ziebel admitted.
âWe have committed to work with our partners to drive change and improve availability of renewables,â and Nokia views the uptick in corporations committing to renewable electricity as âa welcome development,â he said.
