I won a Grammy! Kinda… Here’s a little vid of an alt take of Jon Batiste’s Album of the Year Grammy-award-winning song ‘Tell the Truth.’ That’s me giving the ‘take 3’ sign at the end there. I’m pretty sure producer should be credited for this video, but if not it could’ve been who also tape-op’d and assisted on the mostly live sessions (even vocals!) at . Actually no, Dave was almost assuredly manning the tape machinremote like the pro that he is. Anyway, neither of us made the credit list.
There are probably several people to blame, but I’d instead like to take this opportunity to raise awareness to the fact that freelance engineers such as Dave and Myself in part make our living off credits. People hear my outrageously courageous snare sounds and want to find out who worked on the album. Without care taken in crediting, they’ll never know it was me. The people working behind the scenes really get hurt by this, and you’d be dumbfounded as to how often it happens. For example, had the eponymous Grammy nominated 2013 Lumineers album won any Grammys i’d’ve ALSO gotten snubbed, as I’m an uncredited engineer and vocalist on that Lumineers record. Theres three of me singing in my prettiest falsetto on the chorus of Ho Hey and I wasn’t even singing the right lyrics. True story. While we’re here, Bill Gaal (also surprisingly uncredited…) sang on the hook with me. I’m pretty sure he knew the right words tho.
Anyway you see where I’m going with this. To all the folks making records- I treat every session like your career depends on it, please take crediting seriously like my career depends on it.
Now who do I know over at the Academy?
