San Ysidro Health is proud to be a leader in the concept, design and implementation of a clinical trial advancing health for all through AI-powered diabetic retinopathy screening.

The Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Point of Care AI (DRES-POCAI) study, being conducted at two SYHealth clinics sites, explores how integrating artificial intelligence into primary care workflows can improve screening rates, early detection, and timely referrals for patients with diabetes, especially in historically underserved communities.

This innovative approach uses AI to analyze retinal images at the point of care, with results instantly available in electronic health records, helping streamline care and reduce barriers to vision-saving treatment.

Eyenuk is excited to partner with San Ysidro Health as part of the Kaiser Permanente Augmented Intelligence in Medicine and Healthcare Initiative (AIM-HI) to bring the EyeArt AI Eye Screening technology into their institution and patient community. This collaboration aims to close care gaps and provide broader access to patients. San Ysidro Health, one of the grant recipients, is focusing on point-of-care diabetic retinopathy screening using artificial intelligence. The grants, supported by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, will enable research projects implementing AI and machine learning algorithms to enhance diagnostic decision-making in healthcare. The AIM-HI program, led by the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research, aims to rigorously evaluate the implementation of these technologies in diverse, real-world settings.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has immense potential in revolutionizing the detection and monitoring of diseases through ocular imaging, promising unprecedented levels of access and precision. Yet, an industry-wide challenge persists: the lack of standardization across ocular imaging data from different device manufacturers, inhibiting seamless interoperability between diverse systems. This limitation affects our ability to enhance quality, accessibility, and equity in healthcare.

Recognizing this, the National Eye Institute (NEI), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) convened a workshop in May 2022. The event brought together industry leaders, including Dr. Kaushal Solanki, CEO and Founder of Eyenuk. As an outcome of this collaborative effort, these federal agencies have unveiled a detailed roadmap this month promoting the adoption of standardized imaging data.
