There's a sound your AC makes right before it costs you a lot of money. Most people ignore it.
It's usually small at first. A rattle when it kicks on. A faint hiss. A click that wasn't there last summer. A unit that runs and runs but never quite gets the house where you set it. Easy to tune out until it isn't.
A rattle or buzz often points to a loose component or a failing motor. A hiss can be a refrigerant leak, which makes your whole system work harder for less. Short-cycling — turning on and off over and over — is the system struggling, not resting. And a unit that runs constantly in June isn't "just working hard." It's telling you something's wrong.
None of these fix themselves. They get worse, and they get worse fastest in peak season when the system's under the most load. The cheap version of this story is the one where you call when you first hear it. The expensive version is the one where you wait until it quits.
If your system is making a noise it didn't used to, or running in a way that feels off, don't wait it out. Have it looked at while it's still a small problem.
