The New Hampshire Academy of Science (NHAS) mentors and supports middle/high school student research

We had a great time on Saturday at the 4th annual New England STEM Symposium!! This year's event was hosted by the Dartmouth Cancer Center.

Students from all over New England presented their research in professional poster sessions, had lunch with STEM professionals, and enjoyed some great talks!

It's been a busy Earth Week at NHAS with lots of visits to the beaver ponds and an afternoon spent pulling knotweed from the banks of Hewes Brook!

Dresden here we come!
During February break our orchid conservation students are practicing their research poster presentations for the World Orchid Conference at the end of March.

There's a winter weather system coming through so we've made the hard decision to cancel our in-person programming at today.

It's the first week of our winter session of Afterschool Research! There are still some spots open on Tuesdays and Thursdays if you want to join!

This is also Gael's last first day of programming as a student! He'll be graduating in June!

At NHAS, we’re grateful every day for the chance to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders.

Last year, 6 NHAS students attended — and came home with the Young Investigators Award, a distinction usually earned by Ph.D. students!

We've been working on a new research project in the After School program! A couple students working with Prof. Olivia have started tackling putting together a cat skeleton we got through Carolina Biologics. This is a great practice in comparative anatomy. Vertebrates have a lot of similar structures, but they differ according to the species life history differences.

Last couple of Wednesdays we have been working through identifying all the wee tiny bones that make up the "wrist" and "ankles" of the cat, the carpal and tarsal bones. With their size, these are some of the most difficult areas of the skeleton, and look much different than the larger seal flipper bones Prof. Olivia is used to. Everyone likes a good puzzle though, and skeletons are the ultimate jigsaw puzzle!
