🌦 Our team has had boots on the ground (and on roofs) all day today. 💪 From sunrise until the storms rolled back in this afternoon, we’ve been out helping homeowners in areas hit hard by the hail storm last night, like Solon and Chagrin Falls.

If you’re seeing large icicles or your roof isn’t holding snow—even when temperatures are below freezing, like the example shown—read below.

Unfortunately, you are experiencing Ice Dams on your roof. Here are some steps to help prevent this:

1. Check your insulation.
Poor or insufficient insulation allows heat to escape from the living space into the attic.

2. Address recessed lighting.
Even if your recessed lights are IC-rated, they may not be properly covered with insulation, which can warm the attic. If the fixtures are non-IC rated, you may need a heat shield to maintain proper clearance so insulation can be safely installed around them.

3. Ensure proper attic ventilation.
Both older and newer homes can suffer from inadequate intake and exhaust ventilation. Without proper airflow, warm air becomes trapped in the attic, contributing to ice buildup.
