Spring Genetics

Spring Genetics Spring Genetics produces genetically improved high performing tilapia broodstock

Spring Genetics was established in 2009 and is the production arm of Akvaforsk Genetic Center AS (www.afgc.no), the world’s largest R&D & Consultancy group on selective breeding programs for aquaculture species. The group has been essential in developing the genetic material used in salmon production world wide, as well as for the GIFT material for Tilapia in Asia. From our state-of-the art Breedi

ng Nucleus centrally located in South-Florida, we supply our hatcheries in the Americas with highly selected genetic material which in turn distribute Spring-Tilapia® fingerlings to grow-out farmers.

Tech Tuesday - 🐟✨ Did you know?

A tilapia larva’s yolk sac is its very first “lunch box” — packed with everything it needs to survive and grow during the first days of life.

The yolk sac contains:

🟡 Proteins – for muscle and tissue development
🟡 Lipids (healthy fats) – the main energy source for growth and swimming
🟡 Vitamins & minerals – essential for organ formation and immune support
🟡 Enzymes & nutrients – helping the larva develop before it starts feeding externally

During this stage, the yolk sac helps the fry:
✔️ Develop vital organs
✔️ Build strength and energy reserves
✔️ Improve early survival
✔️ Prepare for active feeding and fast growth

At Spring Genetics, understanding every stage of larval development helps us produce strong, healthy, and high-performing tilapia from day one. 🌎🐟

Happy Tilapia FRY-DAY! 🐟💙

This week we wrapped up our performance and growth trials at both our breeding nucleus and grow-out farm.

A lot of hard work goes into every fish we produce, and none of it would be possible without this amazing team.
At Spring Genetics, our greatest asset is our people! 👏🔥

Tech Tuesday 🧂💦🐟 | Why use salt in aquaculture?

Salt is a simple and useful tool to help keep fish healthy at all stages of production.

It’s often used as a preventive measure, especially during stressful moments like handling or transport.

Salt helps fish maintain their balance with the water and also stimulates mucus production, which works as a natural protection against diseases.

It can also help reduce the effects of nitrite in the water.

In hatcheries and artificial incubators, salt supports egg and larval survival, helping control microorganisms and improving hatching success.

It’s not a treatment for everything, but when used correctly, it’s a practical and affordable way to support fish health.

✔️ Reduces stress
✔️ Supports fish protection
✔️ Improves overall health
✔️ Supports eggs and larvae in hatcheries

Healthy fish, better results 🐟

Tech Tuesday 📚🐟🔬 | Health Surveillance & Export Compliance

Today, we welcomed veterinarian Kathleen Hartman from Kennebec River Biosciences, accredited by the USDA, as part of Spring Genetics’ health surveillance program.

During the visit, biological samples were collected for laboratory analysis to support our annual fish health monitoring and disease-free certification.

This process is also essential for renewing export licenses, ensuring compliance with international sanitary regulations and enabling the safe global distribution of our genetic material.

At Spring Genetics, strict health surveillance and regulatory compliance are key to maintaining the highest standards in global aquaculture.

Tech Tuesday 📚🐟 | Inspiring the Next Generation

This last week was extra special at Spring Genetics! We had the pleasure of welcoming the CEO’s daughter as part of Take Your Child to Work Day 👧✨

Moments like this go beyond a simple visit — they are an opportunity to inspire the next generation and raise awareness from an early age about the importance of responsible food production.

During her time with us, we shared a bit about: • How fish are raised with care and responsibility
• The importance of animal welfare in aquaculture
• Biosecurity practices to keep animals healthy
• And why producing safe, high-quality food matters

Teaching children where food comes from helps build respect for animals, the environment, and the people behind food production. It also encourages healthier eating habits and more conscious choices in the future.

At Spring Genetics, we believe that sustainability and responsibility start with education — and it’s never too early to start. 🌱🐟

This is what quality looks like.
Bright, clean, and naturally shining ✨
Our tilapia are raised in low-stress, clean water systems, which means:
✔️ Better color
✔️ Better texture
✔️ Better taste
Not all tilapia are the same… and you can see the difference.

Tech Tuesday — Male or Female: Why It Matters? 🐟♀️🐟♂️

S*x identification is a fundamental step in our breeding program, supporting the selection of the best males and females and maintaining the quality of our genetic lines.

At Spring Genetics, this step requires thorough preparation, with a focus on proper fish handling, stress reduction, and minimizing errors during the process.

Here, we are separating males and females based on subtle physical characteristics:

Males:
• Single urogenital opening
• More robust body
• Faster growth rates

Females:
• Two distinct openings (urethra and oviduct)
• More elongated body
• Slower growth rates

In improved genetic lines, sexing can be more challenging, requiring trained personnel and standardized procedures.

In aquaculture, attention to detail makes all the difference.
