Eleven students from University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and UW-Stout Polytechnic got their feet wet during the inaugural River Studies Field Course offered by UW-La Crosse.

These "River Scholars" spent five immersive days camping and canoeing along the lower Wisconsin River. The course included:
💦 A three-day guided river trip from Muscada to Boscobel
💦 Field lessons in river safety, aquatic invertebrate biology, fish sampling, remote sensing, rights of nature, and river policy and protection
💦 A tour of the Upper Mississippi River aboard UWL's research vessel Prairie Springs
💦 Career networking with professionals from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Alaska Department of Fish and Game

Natalie H., was floored by all the opportunities she had to get her feet wet in water science through the Universities of Wisconsin. The University of Minnesota student participated in the 2026 Freshwater@UW Summer Research Opportunites Program, coordinated by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and took a hands on lab and field course at University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

We love supporting these opportunities for the next generation of water professionals! Applications for the 2027 Freshwater@UW cohort will open Nov. 1!

Join us Friday, Oct. 30, at noon for "BenthicNet: Expanding Access to Specimen Collections for Biomonitoring" webinar. Register on our website!

Researchers from UW-Parkside, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Madison and the Milwaukee Public Museum will talk about the creation of BenthicNet, how the data will be used and their goal of contributing to a resurgence of biomonitoring expertise in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin has numerous reference collections of benthic specimens gathered over decades. BenthicNet is expanding access to these historically significant specimens while also training the next generation of biomonitoring experts.

This event is part of the online Great Lakes Freshwater Symposium series, a partnership between the Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin, the Great Lakes Higher Education Consortium and Council of the Great Lakes Region.
