Why is the City of MISSION VIEJO ready to spend up to $ 420,600 of taxpayers money to provide high-speed Internet services to 15 small businesses @ the Shopping Center across City Hall? Is subsidy the new policy of this City Council? According to the rates provided today by Cox @ $ 120/month (w/ a min 3 years contract) it will take the City 19.5 years just to break even if a minimum of 15 business will subscribe to this service. The big question is how many of these business will be around for 20 years to pay the bill to provide a decent ROI to the taxpayer?
Tuesday's night's MV City Council's Agenda Item # 12 - City of Mission Viejo considers selling Internet access to private entities @ the Village Shopping Center across from City Hall .
The City Council just voted 5-0 to have COX & TELEPACIFIC to come up with a solution in 45-60 days or sooner to provide high-speed Internet services to the 14 remaining private entities (from the City list) located at the Village Center @ competitive market rates.
TELEPACIFIC is already providing high-speed Internet services for a while to Harbor Insurance and most recently to the Bowling Alley (Saddleback Lanes) starting September 18, 2015 according to their representative Mr. Milad Khatami. COX's Business Director had indicated that the CIP investment is at least $100K and that some easement issues with the City needed to be ironed out in order to install the required equipment to provide speeds up to 150 Mbps. However in an OCR article dated 10/29/2015 it has been reported that if the City steps in to provide services the cost of infrastructure at taxpayers expense will range from $ 227K to $ 421K and that is NOT acceptable to many Mission Viejo taxpayers.
TelePacific already provides speeds from 1 to 10 Mbps to the Bowling Alley and Harbor Pacific Insurance that does NOT require additional infrastructure investment and that is a good start.
