February was brutal. Yet we got a message from one of our customers who upgraded from a 10 seer single stage to a 16 seer two stage heat pump. They reported a $100 savings in February alone!

Heat pumps are not normally considered a good source of heat for our climate. And for older machines, I agree! Natural gas is generally speaking much more cost effective (and more comfortable!) than a heat pump. But as the industry changes and we move toward more efficiency, they are getting much better. In the coldest times, heat pumps have a harder time keeping you comfortable. They don't make enough heat to keep your home warm, so they energize electric coils to heat your home. They are not at all unlike plugging in a space heater but they are really big ones! A properly operating heat pump today will run only your heat pump and will turn on the strip heat if it is needed. We spend some time in the winter where that's the case. A lot of times though, it is in the 40's and up. Where a two stage system really shines is those days where it's cool outside, but not really cold. You only need a little heat to stay comfortable. So it kicks on the first stage, or "low heat" you might say. Or when it's 80° out and you only need a little cooling to stay warm. It will engage "low cooling". When the temperature is up in the 90s it will provide you with full cooling or when it gets chilly out, full heating. And still not turning the expensive to operate electric strips until necessary! You're only paying to do what work is necessary instead of paying to run 60,000 BTUs of cooling when you only need, say, 25,000. You're just running that 25,000 and that's it, saving on your electric bill BIG TIME. They typically cost $1000-$1500 over a base line machine and you can expect to see a return on that in less than 5 years. And that savings will compound over the next 15-20 years of the equipment's lifespan. Putting in a new high efficiency unit will pay for itself in utilities savings over its life and as rates climb, the savings only come faster.

Story time: I went on a service call yesterday for a 700 sq.ft. home that had a 4 ton unit installed. Customer reports unit works fine and keeps his home cold normally. Half of what your home's air conditioning does is lower temperature. The hidden part that some do not realize is that the other portion of work it does is to lower humidity inside your home, which helps facilitate ev***ration from your skin (aka sweat), which makes you feel cooler. Having a unit sized too large will almost instantaneously drop temperature, which can cause condensation on walls and other areas inside your home instead of collecting inside your unit and going down the drain. This can contribute to smells and mold in the long term use of your home. This example is why it's so important to have a qualified person come and size your unit correctly. As we move toward home efficiency, your hvac system is a key component to consider.

As we come into allergy season: The number one thing you can do as a homeowner is check your filters. All filters will slow airflow. The really nice ones that are supposed to filter allergens and increase indoor air quality slow down airflow more than they should, while not really giving a measurable decrease in improving air quality. Most HVAC techs will tell you to buy a cheap filter and change it regularly. If you're concerned about indoor air quality, buy an actual HEPA filter for your home. They will do a much better job and will not decrease the efficiency of your HVAC unit.

We are proud to offer duct cleaning services. According to the EPA, air pollution inside the home can be 2 to 5 times that of outside levels. Household dust can contain mites, mold, mildew, and animal dander which is circulated through your home via your central air system. Indoor air quality is one of the EPA's top 5 risks to public health.

Most homes will run under $500 for the service and that includes cleaning your grilles, cleaning your ducts, and cleaning your fan assembly. Call today to schedule your inspection!

Today's lesson is on why a bigger unit isn't better.

As your air conditioner runs, air is generally pushed across your cooling coil. It cools the air which we all know to be a good thing. The secondary action is where the lesson lies. As the temperature drops below the dew point, the water v***r in the air collects on the coil. Just like what happens on your glass of tea or can of beer. The water v***r collects on the coil, runs down into the pan, and down the drain. This lowers the humidity in your home which attributes to comfort in the summer. The moisture on your skin can ev***rate more easily which makes it feel cooler. When your unit is oversized, it can make your cycle times shorter, which will lessen the amount of time your unit is collecting humidity from the air. Once the temperature drops in your home, that humidity will collect on walls, floors, carpets, etc. instead of collecting on your cooling coil and being deposited in the drain. Your units need to run to keep you comfortable, and bigger is not always better.
