Here are a few snapshots from yesterday's flight. 609 photos were stitched together into an orthomosaic map using RTK correction data to improve GPS accuracy to within 3 CM.

Hotel Farm in Henniker, NH. The blurry photo is the Google Satellite photo. The other is with the DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise using RTK to get 3 cm accuracy. That means that the photo is within 3 cm of its actual horizontal position in space! (6 cm vertically). Without it, the accuracy could be off by as much as 2 meters horizontally, and 10 meters vertically.

Today I had two red tailed hawks and a male bald eagle working together to corral my Matrice 4T at one point, ahahah. Amazing site.

Regardless of what type of mission we're flying, there is much preparation and pre-flight planning that happens before a UAV pilot leaves the office to go to a mission site.

Very much like pre-flight in a manned aircraft, we must ensure that weather conditions meet certain minimum requirements, get FAA approval if we're flying in controlled airspace (sometimes that has to happen up to 90 days in advance, depending on the specific airspace type). We check NOTAMS (Notice to Airman) for local restrictions and especially pay attention to Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR) that often accompany an arriving or departing VIP (Air Force One). Check our drones for mechanical issues and ensure that we are flying with the latest software updates every time.

We also have to do a self-check. Are we safe to fly? Did we get sufficient sleep? Are we sick or maybe mentally/emotionally not fit to fly? Flying while your body or mind isn't up to the task can lead to damage to the aircraft, to manned aircraft flying around you, or injury to yourself or others. It's a big deal and can't be left out of your regular pre-flight checks.

We don't just go outside, pop in a battery and launch. As a Private Pilot I am familiar with the process, but I don't think people generally understand how important the process is in flying UAVs, whether commercially or for recreation.
