On May 7, 2026, Tennessee lawmakers split Shelby County into three congressional districts, dismantling the state’s only majority-Black seat. The governor signed it the same day it passed. The NAACP sued within hours.

Boundaries are simplified for reference and show Shelby County portions only. All three districts extend well beyond county lines. Signed into law May 7, 2026, amid widespread opposition and active litigation.

There was a wetland here once. You can still see its outline if you know what you’re looking for. The shark tooth shape in the middle of this West Tennessee crop field is the last pond standing in a stretch of Forked Deer River bottomland that got drained, cleared, and planted over generations ago. The ponds that once broke up this landscape were leveled one by one, turned into tillable acreage. This one survived because the ground beneath it never cooperated. The watershed kept pushing water into the low spot, the trees kept their hold on the edge, and the rows had to bend around it every season. From the air, it looks deliberate. Almost geometric. But it’s just what happens when a place refuses to be anything other than what it always was.
