Snaps from Charity Hospital, where Southkick is helping with documentation and preservation. At over a million square feet this might be the biggest preservation project in the US.
The story of Charity and its unethical forced closing after Katrina is really painful. I remember it was really infuriating to watch when it was happening, and the grief in this space still feels palpable.
Despite being (intentionally) left to be vandalized and damaged for decades, we were surprised to find a lot of historic fabric still exists, including tile, limewash and stone. On one floor the segregated hallway is still intact ( #12). The resident quarters on the upper floors are still intact as well.
