The burnt hero who came to Earth, the secret of the Orion heat shield...

The challenge faced when a spacecraft entering the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of 40,000 kilometers per hour from space cannot be underestimated. The friction that occurs when the Orion spacecraft enters the Earth's atmosphere increases its external temperature to 2,800 °C. This is more than half the temperature of the surface of the Sun...

The spacecraft's heat shield is made of a special chemical material. It protects the astronauts inside the spacecraft by burning away (ablation).

The Orion space capsule, which returned to Earth from space, is currently undergoing rigorous testing at NASA. The charred exterior of the spacecraft, which was recovered from the Pacific Ocean, is a testament to its arduous journey.

The intense heat and friction during reentry into Earth's atmosphere have severely damaged the outer thermal envelope of the Orion spacecraft. These burn marks shed light on the challenging conditions the spacecraft faced and how it overcame them successfully.

NASA scientists are now closely examining the thermal envelope and other components of the Orion capsule. The data obtained from these tests will help improve the technology used on future missions, ensure the safety of astronauts, and make deep space exploration more successful...

Orion is not just a technological tool, it is a living symbol of humanity's perseverance, space exploration, and unparalleled achievement...

These burns are not a defeat, but a data record left on the path to success. Technology advances as a result of thousands of such harsh experiments...

Now that the Artemis II crew is home, what's next for our Artemis program?

We're preparing to launch Artemis missions every year. Artemis III is next up in 2027, with Artemis IV landing on the Moon in 2028.

The Dark Forest Theory: Are We Purposefully Being Ignored by the Universe? 🌌 🤫

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered, "Where is everybody?" With billions of galaxies and trillions of stars, it seems mathematically impossible that Earth is the only planet with intelligent life. Yet, space is completely, terrifyingly silent.

Welcome to the Dark Forest Theory—one of the most chilling explanations for the Fermi paradox.

Here is why scientists and astronomers think the universe is hiding from us:

🌲 The Universe is a Dark Forest
Imagine a dark, dense forest at night. It seems quiet, but it’s actually full of life. The animals aren’t making a sound because they know that making noise attracts predators. According to this theory, the universe is that forest.

🚀 Survival of the Quietest
If an advanced alien civilisation exists, they likely understand a brutal rule of survival: any other civilisation could be a threat. Instead of broadcasting their location with radio waves (like humanity has been doing for decades), they stay completely silent to avoid being targeted by a more advanced, aggressive species.

📡 Are We Making a Huge Mistake?
Since 1974, humanity has been sending powerful radio messages into deep space, hoping someone will answer. We are the foolish hikers walking through the dark forest with a flashlight, shouting, "Is anyone out there?" If the Dark Forest Theory is correct, our friendly messages might be acting as a beacon for cosmic predators.

Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking once warned against reaching out to extraterrestrial life, comparing it to Christopher Columbus arriving in the Americas—an event that didn't turn out well for the native population.

What do you think? Are we truly alone in the universe, or is everyone else just smart enough to keep quiet?

Artemis II Recovery

NASA’s Orion spacecraft with Artemis II crewmembers NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, commander; Victor Glover, pilot; Christina Koch, mission specialist; and CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, mission specialist aboard is seen under parachutes as it lands in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California, Friday, April 10, 2026. NASA’s Artemis II mission took Wiseman, Glover, Koch, and Hansen on a 10-day journey around the Moon and back to Earth. Following a splashdown at 7:07 p.m. EDT, NASA, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Air Force teams are working to bring the crewmembers and Orion spacecraft aboard USS John P. Murtha.

Selfie time!!

My crew snapped this photo of me — Rise! — and one of my besties, NASA astronaut Christina Koch, using one of the solar array wing cameras on our Orion spacecraft.

We took this photo on flight day 4, when we were more than halfway to the Moon. Once we got closer to the Moon, we used these windows to take pictures and record observations about the Moon to share with scientists back on Earth. All of that information will help us discover new things about the Moon!! -Rise
