Maintaining Voltage Stability in Power Transmission Substations

🔄 Transformer Tap Changer Mechanism

Voltage drops or rises are managed by adjusting the Transformer Tap Changer. This is done by adding or removing sets of windings to increase or decrease the voltage according to grid conditions.

On-Load Tap Changer (OLTC): In transmission stations, the tap changer operates under load, meaning there is no need to disconnect the transformer.

Off-Load Tap Changer: In Distribution Transformers, the transformer must be de-energized (disconnected) before changing the tap step.

🕹️ Control Philosophies

The method of operation varies between substations:

Manned Substations: Operators receive instructions from Control Centers to change taps manually based on network needs.

Automated Substations (RTCC): These rely on a Remote Tap Changer Control (RTCC) panel. Its goal is to maintain constant load voltage automatically using a specialized Relay.

⚙️ Key Relay Settings:

Tap Steps: Total number of available positions.

Dead Band: The specific voltage range (threshold) that triggers a tap change.

Binary Inputs: Signals that help the relay decide to change a tap or "Block" the operation (e.g., in case of a motor fault).

🤝 Parallel Operation of Transformers

When transformers work in parallel, the relay identifies the connection through two main methods:

1. Master–Slave Method: One transformer acts as the Master (decision-maker), and the others (Slaves) follow its steps.

2. Reactive Circulating Current: This is the most common method. It detects tap mismatches by monitoring the Circulating Current and adjusts the taps until this current disappears.

Popular Relays: RTV, TAPCON.

🛡️ Under-Voltage Blocking

If a severe voltage drop occurs, the relay enters a Block state. This happens when the voltage reaches a setting where changing the tap no longer provides a significant improvement, protecting the equipment.

🔋 Power Factor and Capacitor Banks

A significant voltage drop is often associated with a low Power Factor (PF). To fix this, Capacitor Banks are connected to improve the PF and boost the voltage.

📐 The Governing Law:

The relationship is governed by the Reactive Power formula:

Q = V × I × sin(Φ)

Q: Reactive Power (Measured in VAR).

V: Voltage (Measured in Volts).

I: Current (Measured in Amperes).

sin(Φ): The sine of the phase angle between voltage and current.

Conclusion: Increasing the Reactive Power [Q] through capacitor units leads to an improvement in voltage levels.
