Advantages and Disadvantages of a suspension bridge

ADVANTAGE:

The central opening can be very long in relation to the amount of material used, allowing to communicate very wide canyons or waterways.
They can have the platform at high altitude allowing the passage of very tall ships.
They do not need central supports during their construction, allowing to build on deep canyons or waterways that are very busy with maritime traffic or very turbulent waters.
Being relatively flexible, they can flex under severe winds and earthquakes, where a stiffer bridge would have to be bigger and stronger.

DISADVANTAGES:

In the absence of rigidity the bridge can become impassable in conditions of strong winds or turbulence, and would require temporarily closing it to traffic. This lack of rigidity greatly hinders the maintenance of railway tracks.
Under large wind loads, the towers exert a great moment (curved force) on the ground, and require a great foundation when working on weak soils, which is very expensive.
