Starship just reached orbit:

SpaceX Starship Flight 14 on Sept 28 finally reached orbital velocity for the first time, validating the vehicle NASA has under contract for Artemis lunar landings . NASA Administrator congratulated SpaceX on the milestone.

SpaceX has also said it intends to sunset Falcon and Dragon as it concentrates on Starship, which is why NASA just bought 3 more Crew Dragon flights for $946M.

3 New Science Payloads for the Moon Base

On Oct 2, NASA selected three new investigations via its PRISM / CLPS program to fly to the lunar surface :

• LEMS-SP - Long-term environmental monitor at the South Pole to track micrometeoroids and volatiles

• GIMLI - Will explore Marius Hills Pit to find lava tubes that could be natural shelters for astronauts

• DISCO - First on-the-ground measurement of ice in lunar micro-cold traps and how to use it.

NASA officially pivots Artemis to a Moon Base:

Major strategy shift announced Oct 4. NASA has redirected its near-term lunar strategy toward building infrastructure on the Moon's surface, laying out a phased plan for a South Pole base, and intends to pause the Gateway lunar-orbit station in its current form.

Administrator Jared Isaacman announced a sweeping overhaul, scrapping plans for the Gateway and redirecting its components toward a permanent base. The plan is being reported as a $20-30B phased buildout over ∼7 years to use lunar water ice for fuel and life support.

Crew-12 undocking LIVE at 8am ET - watch 8 months in space end with a California splashdown tomorrow!"

SpaceX's Crew-12 Dragon is set to undock from the ISS today, Wednesday Oct 7, bringing NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev back after nearly eight months. Dragon will undock autonomously around 8:00 a.m. ET and splashdown off California about 27 hours later on Oct 8.

The return was delayed from Monday due to weather conditions at the splashdown site. It comes right after NASA's SpaceX Crew-13 launched from Cape Canaveral on Oct 1 and docked this week.

During the night of August 27–28, the full moon passed through Earth's shadow, offering skywatchers across the Americas a nearly total lunar eclipse. (Observers in Europe and Africa were also able to witness a partial eclipse.) As the remaining sunlight travels through Earth's atmosphere, shorter wavelengths like blue and violet are scattered, causing the light that hits the lunar surface to appear reddish.
This photograph was captured by a NASA photographer at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. Often called "America's Rocket Factory," Michoud is responsible for constructing the Space Launch System rockets that power our Artemis missions to space and back to the Moon

The upcoming 2028 Mars mission highlighted by Donald Trump features an advanced spacecraft named Space Reactor 1 Freedom. NASA is using this vehicle to test nuclear electric propulsion in deep space for the first time. The ship is powered by a uranium-fueled nuclear reactor that splits atoms to generate electricity for its thrusters.
Because solar energy becomes ineffective the farther a spacecraft moves from the Sun, nuclear propulsion provides a dependable solution. It supplies continuous power, significantly cutting down journey times across the solar system. The onboard reactor will produce a steady stream of electricity to keep the thrusters firing continuously throughout the long interplanetary flight.
Rather than attempting a surface landing, NASA designed this mission as a flyby. The goal is to validate the nuclear hardware in the harsh conditions of deep space without taking on the severe engineering risks of landing a heavy reactor on another world. Successfully executing this test flight is a required milestone before scaling the technology up for future crewed missions.
Upon reaching Mars in 2029, the primary spacecraft will release a separate payload known as SkyFall. This system will deploy three small helicopters—modeled after the successful Ingenuity design—directly into the Martian atmosphere. These drones will spend months exploring rugged, inaccessible terrain that conventional wheeled rovers cannot safely navigate.
Each helicopter is equipped with ground-penetrating radar to search for deep underground ice reserves. They will also capture high-resolution aerial imagery and track local weather variations across the planet. Identifying accessible water sources and analyzing atmospheric conditions are critical first steps for establishing future human outposts on Mars.
